Motorhead--Boneshaker: 25 & Alive (DVD)
SPV   2002

The Motorhead live experience is one of the most wonderfully overwhelming things a person can encounter in their life. Now, thanks to this Boneshaker: 25 & Alive DVD, the greatest show on Earth is at your beckoned call. It not only features the Motorhead 25th Anniversary show but more surprises and extras than you can shake a stick at.

The total running time of this DVD clocks in at a little under three hours and it really isn't much of a shock considering all it contains. The actual 25th anniversary show is a whopping 23 songs long. Beyond the actual number of tunes played, this show is filmed in a way that captuers the vibe of really being at a
Motorhead show fairly accurately. There are certain things you could never really do justice to on tape, like showing how monsterous and intimidating the band looks when the green light comes up underneath them during "Orgasmatron." Still, this DVD comes remarkably close to the real thing. On top of the main show, you get four songs from the Wacken Open Air festival, a ton of interviews, and even Lemmy playing acoustically with Phil. All this said, it only scratches the surface of what Boneshaker: 25 & Alive has to offer.

Perhaps the most memorable moments from this DVD come out of the many great guest appearances during the 25th anniversary show.
"Killed By Death" sees both Lemmy's son and Phil's son join the band for some rocking, family style. The always beautiful and leather-lunged Doro Pesch lends additional vocals on "Born To Raise Hell." Heck, Queen's Brian May even makes an appearance during the final encore, "Overkill." However, the moment sure to send all diehard Motorhead fans into a hollering-at-the-set, jumping-up-and-down frenzy is when former guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke joins the band for "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch." Eddie comes out in his old western bib shirt and bullet belt, stepping back into the saddle with all the ease and laid-back coolness you'd hope for. Seeing and hearing the guitars of "Fast" Eddie and Phil Campbell melding so perfectly is absolutely thrilling. It's one chill-inducing moment after another on Boneshaker: 25 & Alive.

If you were to only purchase one DVD in your lifetime,
Boneshaker: 25 & Alive would need to be it. Your life is not complete until you have bore witness to the greatness only Motorhead could've brought you in this package. Overwhelming, indeed--it couldn't have been any other way. Here's hoping there's another 25 years to come--if anyone can pull it off, it's Motorhead.
