Bona Roba--"Cunningham Park" + 1
Sonico   2004

In describing Bona Roba's style, you could say they play treble-spiked garage rock n' roll with a slant of pop sensibility, as well as a wee pinch of sophistication. So, what seperates this band from the thousands of others who've chosen the same path? Well, the same thing that always thins the herd--song quality. On this 7", Bona Roba definitely deliver the goods, swimming instead of sinking.

The A-side offers you the gem
"Cunningham Park." Of the two songs on this disc, this is the one which feels destined to immediately click with listeners. It rocks but isn't a barnburner. Instead, you're bathed in a cool, laid-back snottiness which burrows into your brain, thanks to the tune's hooky nature.

"The Slip" closes out this slab, on the B-side. This one's a little more sinister feeling and is bolstered by its great dynamic contrast. The understated verses are balanced perfectly by the forceful chorus sections. "The Slip" also gets a boost from an infectuous injection of background vocals which compliment the raw nature of the lead vox very well.

Essentially,
Bona Roba give you that good Thunders/Dolls/Dead Boys vibe we all love but relaxed to the point it all feels like it was hybridized with the Meat Puppets. This is all a pretty strightforward affair but superbly executed and crafted. Well done and very worth checking out.
