Bad Machine--Rip Your Heart
Dead Beat   2003

Finland sure has been producing a ton of great bands in recent times. From the traditional doom metal of Reverend Bizarre to the rocking strains of the Flaming Sideburns, it seems to be coming from all angles. Now, with Rip Your Heart, the Finnish Bad Machine have unleashed a raw-assed slab of rawk 'n punk destruction that leaves virtually everyone else in their genre eating dust.

The obvious way to describe
Bad Machine's sound is to say they play "action rawk" akin to the Hellacopters and Gluecifer. On the most general level, that is true. However, Bad Machine are much more traditional rock and punk and way less KISS than those two bands. The result is a sound that comes off with a warmness and sense of roots which is lacking in many bands who play this style of music. Bad Machine take an already high-octane form and supe it up just a bit more than usual.

The songwriting on
Rip Your Heart is pretty stellar, to boot. This material stays on one speed throughout and that's with the pedal all the way to the floorboard. Quality and consistency are at the fore in this department for Bad Machine. The album's standout track, "Last On Line," really sticks out thanks to the obvious punk structure of its riff. You can hear the punk in all of Rip Your Heart's tunes but especially on this song--the band's Pagans and Jeff Dahl influences being at the fore, here.

If you've been feeling like all your favorite Swedes let their bands get too polished and streamlined,
Bad Machine will be a breath of fresh air for you. Rip Your Heart is incendiary stuff that'll leave you begging for more. Proceed onward and score at will.
