Viva L'American Death Ray Music--A New Commotion, A Delicate Tension (And The Exquisite Corpse Of Mr. Jimmy)
Misprint   2003

American Death Ray have grown a whole lot over the years. Each step has been more memorable than the last, in terms of their recorded output. This new album of theirs, A New Commotion..., is no exception. If you're not hip to the band yet, be implored to get on board immediately.

American Death Ray seem to be most compared to the Modern Lovers which is pretty on point. At the same time, it should be said that the Roxy Music of "Virginia Plain" runs just as strong through the band's sound. Needless to say, if you're only familiar with Nicholas Ray's (a/k/a Nick Diablo) work with 68 Comeback, A New Commotion...may come as a bit of a shock to the system. What you get here is sophisticated feeling pop rock and roll--"raw" is an adjective that never really springs to mind during this listen.

The songs on this disc are all expertly crafted, from beginning to end. Songs like
"The New Age" get quirky enough to recall the bouncing pop of the Wedding Present. That said, A New Commotion...is at its best on "What The Girls Say." With this cut, the band's aforementioned Modern Lovers/Roxy Music influences are at their sharpest, driving the ingenius and potent chorus into your brain for eternity.

With
A New Commotion..., the progress of American Death Ray rolls on. Things keep getting better from this lot and the anticipation for what's to come continues to grow, acoordingly. One listen to this is all it'll take to get you hooked. Keep more of this stuff coming.
