The Compulsions--21 Powers Street
self-released   2004

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's official--the Compulsions are the heir apparent to Guns N' Roses' long vacant mainstream hard rock throne. All the proof needed to confirm this revelation lies in their superb Laughter From Below + EP. This second Compulsions EP, 21 Powers Street, further affirms that these guys are the real deal everyone has been waiting for.

The main thing that seperates
21 Powers Street from Laughter From Below + is consistency. Here, the band's usually rotating membership remains solid. Having the same group of people playing on every track gives these songs a better sense of togetherness. While Laughter From Below + saw the Compulsions morphing a bit from cut to cut, 21 Powers Street serves up a sustained front of Stones-inspired swagger that never lets up.

Because of the synergistic property
21 Powers Street possesses, it's hard to pinpoint a standout track. This material works very well as a collection and it's all very solid. Still, you do get a killer version of Laughter from Below +'s "Shake Hands With The Devil." Also, the disc closing "Shoot My Way To Freedom" shines, resembling the Black Crowes classic "Jealous Again" just a bit.

While
21 Powers Street doesn't take the chances Laughter From Below + does, you really can't go wrong with the Compulsions. This is very exciting music and both EPs are essential listening. So, read up a bit on Laughter From Below + here, then score both discs as soon as humanly possible. This stuff refuses to let you down, listen after listen.
