NELSON HAYS---Nelson Hays, aged 67 years, a prominent farmer of the eastern end of the county, died Friday at Norton Infirmary in Louisville, from the effects of a surgical operation.  The remains were taken to Gravel Switch Saturday morning.  The funeral services were held Sunday morning at Pleasant Hill church, conducted by Rev. Robert Purdom, and the interment was in the Haysville Cemetery.  He is survived by his wife and five children.  Mr. Hays was a Union veteran and served with distinction in the Federal army.  He was a member of Hays Watkins Post, No. 21, and was much beloved by his comrades in arms.  Mr. Hays served as Magistrate of the county for several months, being appointed to the position by ex-Gov. E. A. Wilson to take the place of the late Manson Isaacs.  He was well known throughout the county and was highly esteemed by all who knew him.  Many friends express sorrow at his death.

Mrs. Martha Hays, wife of Mr. Nelson Hays died at the home of her husband, Tuesday, March 29, near Gravel Switch, after a lingering illness.  The funeral services were conducted at Pleasant Hill yesterday and the remains interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery (has a stone at Hourigan Cemetery).  The deceased was 60 years old and a good christian lady.  Besides her husband she is survived by one brother, Thomas Thurman, four sons, Harrison, William, Thomas and  Gaither Hays and two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Nelson and Mrs. Henry Powers who have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
