What is it?

The Hornet Spook Light is a mysterious light of unknown origin. It is found just across the stateline of southwest Missouri, on the Oklahoma border, in the former town of Hornet, Missouri.

The first sighting was almost 200 years ago by the Quapaw indians, and ever since it has drawn visitors from all over the country. Most of the time, it is seen hovering over the roads of E40 and E50 as a speck and sometimes a large ball of light. It can split up, come back together, change colors, bob, dance, blink, blink, glow, flash, disappear, and reappear in a different place. At times, it can be seen in your mirror, but not by the naked eye. See My Encounters for that story.

It is not only seen in the road, but anywhere in that area. A lot of people think that it is only car headlights from the highway ahead, a person trying to trick us by carrying a flashlight, swamp gas, or maybe even a ghost. I am a very frequent visitor of the Spook Light area, and I can tell you by what I've seen it is not of this world. Not to sound creepy, but with all the technology today, no one has been able to solve this mystery. It has been investigated several times and still, we lack an explanation.

Keep in mind it could take several visits and sometimes several hours of sitting in your car to even catch a small glimpse of the Spook Light. Don't expect to turn on to the road and immediately have a show waiting for you. 50% of people who visit do not have any luck. It seems to have some sort of intelligence and tends to steer clear of noise, bright lights and it doesn't help to get out of your car and run around, talking, screaming, listening to music. STAY IN YOUR CAR WITH DOORS LOCKED. I cannot stress this enough. Yes, sometimes you can be doing whatever you want and it will appear, but to better your chances, please stay in your car and keep your lights AND RADIO off. It's best to leave your engine off too, but it is very dark and dangerous out in this area, so it's understandable if you leave your engine running and doors locked (it is very important to keep your doors locked).
