Darkemist was formed in 1995 and since then they have a released a demo and have a full release "Mindseek" thats very heavy,by what I heard, but they are looking for a good label to distribute it,which I think they should have no problem with doing.I recently had Fernanda Manquez(keyboards)one of the newest members fill me in whats up with the band.
ECM:Tell people that have never heard the band what your sound is like?
Fern:Well,it's a little bit hard to talk about the Darkemist sound, because I've only been in the band seven months now and I didn't take part in the music creation.Although,as an initial fan(before becoming a member)and as a friend of the guys,I realized the evolution process.I think now Darkemist have recieved alot of influences from the European scene,Sweden for example. But it has always been a strong metal band, with energy, power, passion and still not looking for extreme brutality, but melodies and feeling.
ECM:You recently played the "Metalera Fest"how was the show?
Fern:We played there with another four bands:Blasphemia,Timecode,Valkiria and Anima Inmortalis. The fest was amazing,it was soldout,we had a really good time and the reviews of our performance were very good for us.We enjoyed our show a lot as well as the people, they were crazy, jumping, moshing and headbanging in spite that they don't know us.
A lot of them voted later for Darkemist in a poll(Metalera website)as the best band of the fest in other words,it was excellent!!!Moreover, there was a good organization and timing,a lot of respect and friendship between all the bands. So we have great memories of that show,as one of the most important for us.
ECM:Having been added to the band as their keyboard player, what do you bring to the sound of the band in your opinion and how did you get the position?
Fern:Initially, the guys wanted a keyboard player for a specific purpose;give the music some atmospheres and intro passages, just on a few songs in the studio but not in shows. After our first gathering, they added me as their keyboardist,as a new member of the band. So,I had to find the Darkemist sound on my keyboard real fast, and learn the most songs I could. But,If all the songs were finished and recorded, what should be my place?
Nowadays,I'm trying to answer that question.I think that I'm still in that kind of initial process or something as a new member of the band.I feel like I'm searching for the right position yet, even if I found the place where I can make whatever I want.I'm bringing more ambient and filling the songs with another instrument,to progressively give it to keyboards more presence and autonomy.
ECM:I read on your website that you have a new guitar player(Pablo Ciudad)does he bring new depth to the band?
Fena:Pablo is our new guitar player since a month ago,so he is still listening to the songs, and learning as much as I do.To replace Fernando the original guitarist has been very difficult because he's a excellent musician and one of the principal minds of Darkemist. But we trust in the freshness and new ideas Pablo will bring to the band.He plays very well and thats why we choose him as a new member.Just in a month,as a newcomer,he played in two shows, including the Metalera Fest, his official debut and he did it great.
ECM:The mp3's on your website don't have anything with you on it as far as I can hear when will we be able to hear you,any new material in the works?
Fena:We have five new songs and working on another one.We were wothout a guitar player since last December so we didn't do any new songs in that time. But now, were gonna strat work on our next album, but we need to release the first one out as soon as possible, and then start recording the new material keyboards included.
ECM:What are your opinions on the Chilean Metal scene nowadays?
Fena:Well,we're many bands of many places trying to keep metal alive. There's agood diversity of bands and that's great because the local scene is taking more activity and power. At the same time, here in Santiago there's more metal night clubs,so we can go there to listen to good music and see live shows too.On the other hand, there are alot of teenagers who are "potential metal people"and I think that is excellent for the metal scene, and we must keep them.
If I would make a critic,I think there's a lack of creativity or at least be more original music, because there's alot of bands trying to imitate the styles of their favorite bands, you know,to follow some European or American music as a mimic, more than an influence. So you can hear, for example."we're a black metal band(with make up and stuff)",or death metal, doom.gothic or whatever. We didn't create any of these styles and we haven't our own.I know it's hard to make it,as Chilean people, but we should try to find details to make a difference.
