Kris woke up peacefully. She sat on the edge of the bed for a moment before standing up and putting on a robe. As she walked towards the bathroom, Zac woke up.
Hey.
She turned around and looked at Zac. Are you wearing clothes? Kris asked, a hint of a smile on her face.
No.
Best get some on. Your family has a tendency to barge in without warning. She walked into the bathroom and brushed her teeth. Zac walked in, then gave her a look. What? she said, the toothbrush hanging from her mouth.
Youre using my toothbrush.
So?
I know where that mouth has been.
Ew!!! she said. I did not and will not do that so you shut up! She smacked his arm as hard as she could. He cringed in pain. Thats so gross.
I was just joking, you didnt have to hit me. He looked at his arm. Im going to have a bruise there, thankyouverymuch.
Brush your teeth, your breath stinks. He gave her a look and grabbed his toothbrush from her hand. She smiled and walked back into the main room. Im hungry.
Order something.
Wont people find it a little odd that a chick is ordering room service from your room? Zac thought about it.
Okay, wait a minute. He finished brushing his teeth and walked over to the phone. What do you want?
I dont know.
Sure Ill order that. Can you bring me up some I dont know? Im sure they have tons of that laying around. Kris gave him a look. Pick!
I want chocolate chip pancakes.
Chocolate chip pancakes? Zac asked. She nodded. You are so incredibly weird. Despite that, he called room service and ordered chocolate chip pancakes for Kris, and some for himself too.
You say Im weird, Kris commented, after he put the phone down. You ordered some for yourself.
With each passing moment it seemed a better and better idea. She rolled her eyes and got under the covers.
Its cold in here.
Put some clothes on.
Why do that when I can just get under nice, warm covers? He gave her a look. What?
You tell me to put clothes on and then you dont follow you own adviceWhat are you doing? Kris smiled and threw her robe in his face. Oh great, room service is going to come in and youre naked.
They wont know.
How do you know that? There could be some freak accident and suddenly the covers are thrown off he demonstrated by throwing off the covers, and youre exposed! Oh no! He mockingly gasped, putting his hand over his mouth. You have no clothes on!
Zac! Its cold! He got on top of her, supporting himself by his arms so he wasnt laying on her. Im frozen.
Ive noticed. He looked down.
Hey! He looked back up at her eyes.
So are you more comfortable or more uncomfortable around me?
Comfortable.
Oh really? he asked. You are?
Yeah. Its only you, Zac. I have nothing to hide from you.
Well you were having some doubts last night, I just want to make sure. And the best way to make sure is to ask.
I just have one thing to say.
What?
You were so amazing.
I was? Well I should say the same thing about you. You were all I imagined and more. She smiled. There was a knock at the door.
Room service.
That was really fast, Zac said. He threw the covers back on Kris and put the robe on. Come in! Zac took care of the room service guy, and in no time they were alone again. Kris sat up.
Gimme my pancakes!
Youre so demanding. He smiled. But we dont eat in the bed.
Yes we do. Gimme!
If you get a robe on, you can join me on the balcony. Otherwise youll have to stay in here and watch me eat your food.
It was my idea in the first place! Zac shook his head and walked out onto the balcony. He sat down, leaving Kris inside. Zac! I dont wanna get up He ignored her. She groaned and put on a robe before going out onto the balcony. I hate you.
I know. He passed her plate to her, along with her silverware. Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much for your wonderful gift. I will treasure it forever.
You better. I spent my entire life savings on that thing. Hours and hours of slave labor
Zac, shut up.
Still, I paid for it.
You know how I feel about you paying for me. Zac gave her a look. I cant handle it, I feel bad.
Kris, theres next to nothing you do that should make you feel bad. Dont ever, or Ill have to shoot you.
Well He held out his hand, his thumb and index finger out in the shape of a gun, and pointed it to her.
Bang.
Hey! You shot me! Im going to have to hurt you now. She reached over and smacked him.
You shouldnt be doing that, Kris. Youre going to pop out of that robe.
Oh well, youve seen them, I dont care.
Fine, go right ahead.
Pervert.
Come on, you would too. She grabbed her silverware and started to eat her pancakes.
These are really chocolately, Kris said, looking in at her pancakes. Wow. Nevertheless, she still ate them and enjoyed them.
About halfway through her meal, Taylor came into the room and walked out onto the balcony. Good morning.
Hola, Kris said. How are you doing?
Alright. Are those chocolate chip pancakes?
Yes, Kris said, picking up her fork. Taylor immediately grabbed the fork from her and ate the bit that was connected to it. Hey!
What? He gave her back her fork. She poked him in the leg with it, then resumed eating. Those are good.
Then get some of your own, Kris said. Stop stealing mine.
But I dont want my own. Again, he took her fork and ate the bit that was connected to it.
Taylor!
Ill stop, okay. Just one more bite.
No.
Come on, he said to her, his bright blue eyes glossing over with tears. His lower lip extended just enough to make her completely give in. Please?
Fine. She sat back. I dont know how you can make your eyes fill up like that. Can you just cry on command or something?
It takes years of practice. Now I can get anything I want.
Well youve perfected it. She looked up at him. He was doing the face again. Stop it! Oh my God that is too cute. She put her hand over her eyes and turned away.
I just had to do it, sorry. Taylor laughed. She looked back up at him again. He did it again.
Zac!! Make him stop!!
Taylor, thats enough. You can leave now. Youre making her squirm.
Fine then. Ill just leave.
Yeah, you do that. He walked away.
Bye now, Kris said, and watched him leave. Oh God. He can never do that face again as long as I live.
Ill make sure of that. Kris looked over at Zac, and saw his upset face. Youre jealous, arent you?
Of what? Taylor? Or you?
Youre jealous!
No Im not.
You so are.
No! She gave him a look. Okay, I am.
Why?
I dont know. Im just kinda afraid of you being with him again. And when you are together, you just kinda ignore me. She grabbed his hand.
I'm sorry, Zac, but theres no need for you to be afraid. Theres no way Im going to get back together with him. Why would I? I love you, I dont love him.
I know
I know youve been trying to keep us apart. Theres no need for it. Theres nothing between us anymore. Zac sighed and sat back in his chair.
We leave today.
Already? Kris said. Damn, you just cant stay and visit for a while, can you? She smiled. Ill miss you, honey.
Ill miss you too, but well be back in three weeks. Not like its a big length of time that Ill be gone.
Better than last time. She shifted, and the chair moved. No way, this is not a swivel chair. She spun around. Oh this is so cool!
Its just a chair, Kris.
But its a balcony chair and it spins! See? She spun around again. I cant believe this.
Simple things for simple minds, I guess. She gave him a look.
Dont ruin my fun. Its just that this is a swivel chair, and were on the balcony. Usually balcony chairs are rusted and falling apart.
That goes to show you how great this place is.
This place is a palace. How much money does it cost to stay here? The beds are comfortablenot to mention hugethey have like seven warm and toasty robes in the closet, and the balcony has swivel chairs. She got up. I have to see what else they have here. She walked around, and stopped in the bathroom. They have a coffee machine in the bathroom! she said, and showed Zac the coffee pot.
Yes, they do.
And a hair dryerI want to live here! Screw the dorm, Im living here.
I agree, its a nice place. But we have better things to do than sit in awe of all the things they have here.
ButZac
We have better things to do. She hung her head and put the coffee pot back.
Can we at least make a pot of coffee?
Kris
Fine. She walked up to him and kissed him.
Im just joking, I dont care about the coffee pot in the bathroom. He gave her a look. Okay, maybe I do care. And I was a bit fascinated about the swivel chair on the balcony. His look remained. Okay, I was really fascinated.
Thats better.
So what are we going to do? If we cant stay here, even though I see absolutely no reason why not, theres enough here to do and we dont have to bother with getting dressed
This is a hotel room. Do you know how incredibly boring it is in a hotel room?
I can keep you entertained, Kris said, a hint of a smile on her face. She let her hand trail down his arm and took his hand.
Oh really? How?
We can put in a movie! She said, and let go of him.
Oh God She laughed. That was not what I wanted you to say.
I know, thats why I said it. God, Zac, what do you think I am, a ho?
Yes.
Hey!
But youre my ho, he said, and put his arms around her waist. And its much better than being someone elses ho.
Yeah, I guessbut that doesnt mean Im not. He looked at her, slightly afraid of her answer.
What have you been doing when Im not around?
Everyone. She giggled. No, thats disgusting. But seriously, what are we going to do?
I dont know. Lets go out or something. Do you know how long its been since weve gone out?
Too long. She put her head against his chest, lightly hugging him. Where are you going after you leave here?
Chicago.
Really?
Yup. I wish we could have gone there a month ago when you were still there.
I miss Chicago. San Francisco is just soboring.
Boring? You have an earthquake every ten minutes! She rolled her eyes.
I have yet to be really affected by one. But Chicago doesnt have earthquakes. Thats a plus. She sighed. I want to go home. I love Michelle and all, but this place just doesnt has the familiarity that Chicago does. I know everyone there. Theres lots and lots of people, but I still know everyone. I havent been to Johnnys since before I came here two years ago.
Thats it, were going to Johnnys!
What? she asked, backing away.
Youre coming with us to Chicago, and you and me are going to Johnnys. Dont pack anything, Ill have a flight for you tonight.
Zac, I cant just go on a plane and run to Chicago for dinner at a restaurant! I dont have the money for that!
You dont, but I do.
You are not paying for me! You are not paying for me to go to Chicago for a few hours. Zac, thats preposterous.
Dont make it sound bad. Im just spoiling you, thats all.
I dont need to be spoiled! If you keep doing things like this, Im going to expect it all the time!
Then we dont do things like this often. But youre still coming with me.
No! I hate it when you pay two dollars for pancakes, Ill hate it even more when you spend three hundred on a plane ticket to Chicago and back.
Too bad. Youre coming with me. She shook her head. If I have to drug you and drag you onto the flight then I will. You will be coming with us.
Why are you doing this? Kris asked.
Because I love you. If Johnnys is what my baby wants, then Johnnys is what my baby gets.
Do you know how many people blow their money when saying that phrase? You dont need to spend money on me.
I need to find something to knock you out with. Zac looked around.
Zac!
Shut up! Im looking. He continued to look. That lamp might work.
Fine, Ill go with you.
I knew youd relent. She sat on the bed.
But I wont be happy about it.
Sure you will. Im gonna tell them youre going along.
Put some clothes on first!
Why?
Youre going out in the hotel with a robe on. Somebodys going to see you.
Im covered. More than I would be if I was wearing, say, a bathing suit. She groaned. Ill be back in a second.
