Prologue

Kris opened up the door. “Thank God you’re here.”

“What do you want? I thought we didn’t like each other anymore. I thought you couldn’t stand me.”

“But I need you.”

“You just need someone because you and Taylor broke up.”

“Please…”

“Listen, I don’t know why I’m here, but you’re lucky I even came. Now will you let me come in or will I have to stay outside all day long?” Kris sighed and let him pass. “I’ll consider your proposal, as long as you don’t hurt me again.”

“I won’t. He’s out of my life now. I don’t even want to think about him anymore.” The man in front of her looked her over.

“What happened?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m willing to listen.” She smiled and shut the door. “I know the two of you broke up, but I don’t know what the extent of it was.”

“It was the same reason I broke up with you, Brian.”

“What? You had someone else?”

“No, you hit me. That’s why I broke up with you. He hit me, so I broke up with him. I don’t take that very well. Anyway he made me feel like shit and he nearly killed me.” Kris walked into the living room, Brian following close behind. “We went to a club. He got dead drunk and drove. We got into an accident and I’m still suffering.”

“What happened to you?”

“Seven broken ribs, a fractured skull and a punctured heart. I got stitches up my leg, my arm and my head, but otherwise it’s all internal.”

“Besides the big ass bruise on your face.”

“That was from him.” Brian sat next to her on the couch. “But he’s gone now. And I feel horrible for what I did to you. It was always you, Brian.” She grabbed his hand. “We were best friends for so long and then I made the biggest mistake of my life. Can you ever forgive me?”

“Consider it forgotten.” He leaned in and kissed her. “As long as I can have you.”
