Chapter Seventeen

Kris walked into the hotel room, in which she'd seen before, and immediately ran into Zac's arms. "What happened?" Zac asked Taylor, trying to pry Kris away from himself. She was too strong for him, though, and she continued to cling to him.

"Her and Brian broke up."

"How'd he take it?" Zac asked. Instead of trying to pry her off him, he wrapped his arms around her. He suddenly saw Gwen run across his mind. It tore at his heart, and he gripped Kris tighter. Taylor immediately got jealous.

"Not too well," Kris said. "But at least I finally got him to say he loves me."

"Hey, that's a plus!" Zac said. "Kris, Taylor's getting jealous. Let go of me." She squeezed him, then went over to Taylor and clung to him.

"Okay, I just didn't want you hanging on Zac," Taylor said. "That does not mean you can block out my air passage."

"Sorry," she said, and sat down on the bed. Zac looked at Kris, afraid to say what he knew he had to.

"I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so Kris. I knew from the beginning that he was going to react like that." She sighed. Zac was right. She knew from the beginning how Brian was going to react. She knew the day she met Taylor that her and Brian could only end in catastrophe. Look what happened. She couldn't stop crying.

She was still crying then. She had stopped bawling like she was doing beforehand, but now her tears were still falling. They were still there. She hated it. She didn't want to cry over Brian, but just thinking about him made her cry harder. She rolled over and put her face into a pillow. "Oh great, you know that I can't do anything for that."

"Yeah well shut up," Kris said, into the pillow. "You knew this was going to happen." Zac looked to Taylor. He was being good through all of this. Zac didn't expect him to be this sympathetic. Brian only kept Taylor from having Kris to himself, as selfish as that seemed. He'd figure Taylor would be jumping for joy right now. Maybe because this was such a big blow to Kris

"Well you just cry until there's nothing left," Taylor said to Kris, and sat down next to her on the bed. "I'll be right here." Zac gave a strange look to Taylor. "What?"

"To tell you the truth, I'd think you would want no part in this whole ordeal."

"Zac, my girlfriend's just gone through a lot. I don't want to just leave it all alone." He laid down next to Kris and looked for her eyes through her arms. "Hello?" he asked, taking her arm and lifting it up. "Are you in there?" Kris looked at him and smiled. "That's what I want to see."

"I'm sorry"

"Don't, it's not your fault." She only smiled wider. "Come here." Kris put her arms around his neck and laid her head on his chest. "You apologize too much."

"It's just something I do. I have to have everything right all the time. Otherwise I feel bad."

"But nothing can be right all the time, Kris."

"I learned that the hard way." She looked up at Zac. "Feeling a bit lonely?" Zac nodded. "You come here." Zac smiled and lay on the other side of her. She put her leg on him.

"What do I owe the pleasure of having your leg on me?" Zac asked. She smiled to him, still holding onto Taylor. She looked up to Taylor, a complete admiration for him suddenly. Everything about him was just what she was looking for. Brian could never be that, he never could be everything she wanted. He didn't want to be hers. He wanted to be free. She knew he liked it better off when they were friends, he just didn't have the guts to mention it. She didn't help him anymore than he helped her, and they both knew it.

But Taylor, he was something different. He was something that she could hold onto as she was now, with his brother only a foot away. She loved being almost as close with Zac as she was with Taylor. Taylor was gazing away, to the television that Zac had flipped on. He was gently stroking her hair as he let a smile come over his face. She was getting attention even without him paying attention to her. She lifted her head and kissed his cheek. He looked down to her, a look of surprise on his face.

"What was that for?"

"Nothing." She kissed him again, this time on his lips. She was pleased that he responded, instead of what Brian used to say. Not now, Kris. I'm watching TV. It was almost telling her that the TV was more important to him than their relationship. Now Taylor had not only responded to her kiss, he deepened it until they were making out with Zac right next to them.

Zac finally looked over. "Ahh!" he yelled, and got up. "Oh my God! Next time warn me before you people start doing stuff like that!" They didn't bother to acknowledge that Zac was speaking. "Fine then, I'll just leave."

"Can you turn the TV off before you leave, Zac?" Taylor said. Zac rolled his eyes and shut off the TV.

"Whatever you want, your royal majesty." Zac left quickly, feeling a bit mischievous. If he said something to his loving mother just down the hall, then maybe he could get the two of them in trouble. Nah, he thought. Taylor's kick my ass and I don't need it right now. He walked off. He turned the corner and ran into his mother. "Hi Mom."

"I was just about to come and check on you guys. Did you leave Taylor in there alone?" she asked. Oh crap she doesn't know Kris is here.

"Um, yeah."

"I need to talk to him."

"No!" Zac said. "Not now, he's um, taking a shower." Diana gave her son a look. "What? He is!"

"I don't think you're telling me the truth, Zac. Why're you out here?"

"To, uh, get a breath of fresh airah hell. Kris is in there and I know how much you hate her."

"I don't hate her." Diana paused. "Why is she here?"

"To see Taylor," Zac said. "Duh." Diana walked past him, to the room. Zac ran ahead of her and into the room. "Mom's coming so stop or get chewed out." Taylor and Kris stopped making out, and Taylor took a seat across the room. Diana walked in then, when Taylor was wiping his lip. She looked at the two of them.

"Hello," she said, directing more to Taylor than Kris.

"Hi Mrs. Hanson," Kris said, immediately. "How are you doing?" Despite the burning hate for Diana that lived inside of her, Kris was smiling. It caused Diana to sigh. That girl was too nice.

"I'm doing rather well, Kris, how are you?"

"Alright," she said, shrugging. "I guess I could be better."

"What's up, Mom?" Taylor asked.

"I just wanted to see how you guys were doing. I didn't hear anything from you in a while." She turned to leave.

"Before you go, can I talk to you for a little bit?" Kris called out. Diana turned around and forced a smile.

"Sure." Kris looked at Taylor.

"Come on Zac, let's leave and do something else so we won't intrude." Taylor grabbed Zac and the two of them left. Once the door closed, Kris looked back to Diana.

"You know, me and your son have been dating for quite some time now. When are you going to stop hating me?" Kris asked. The statement was so blunt it even shocked Kris.

"I don't hate you"

"I know you do. We didn't have that big fight unless you did. Listen, I talked to my mom. She told me about you and everything. We had this long discussion that I never really want to get into, I just want to say that I didn't know her as well as I thought I did." Diana shrugged. "So tell me, why do you still hate me? I know me and Taylor live far apart and allbut come on."

"Kris, it's just what you said. It's because the two of you live so far away. It can only end in something horrible for the both of you. These things never work out."

"We've taken that into consideration and we're going to give it all we've got. So far it's been pretty good." Diana raised an eyebrow. "In the sense that we haven't had any major fights over it. I'm not bad, Mrs. Hanson."

"Stop calling me that, I feel old."

"What do you want me to call you? At least I'm not like a few people and ask to call you Mom." Diana gave her a look.

"Call me Diana."

"Why do you hate me, Diana?" Kris asked, again. "For real."

"Because you're taking my son away from me." Kris nodded.

"I figured." Kris got up and walked over to Diana. "Listen to me, the last thing I want to do is break the lovely mother-son bond. I really don't have much to say on the subject cause I don't have a brother, or a son, so I don't know what the whole thing is about. I've had this discussion before, though. I'm not taking him away from you. I'm just here. He happened to drift away. I'm sorry. There's not much I can do." Diana remained her distant self.

"Well, are you through?" Kris gave Diana a look. "What?"

"Yes, I'm through." Diana walked to the door. "I just want you to know that even though you've been nothing but offensive to me, I still respect you. Zac and Taylor are my best friends right now, I just wish that you could see that." Diana walked out the door. Taylor and Zac came in a few minutes later, to find Kris laying on her stomach, watching TV.

"What was that all about?"

"I just wanted to know why she hated me so much." Kris put her hand up, automatically knowing what Taylor was going to say. "And before you say that she doesn't, she admitted to it. Apparently she doesn't like the fact that I'm 'taking her son away from her.' "

"What is that supposed to mean?" Taylor said.

"Long story, you wouldn't be able to understand. Sorry." Taylor gave her a look. "Nevermind."

Kris, sitting alone in her room, waited for someone to pick up the phone. "Someone, please be home. Come on, Guy, I know you're there." Finally, a breathless voice came over the receiving end.

"Hello?" Kris immediately recognized the voice as Guy's brother.

"Is Guy there?"

"He doesn't want to talk to you." Kris bit her lip. The same thing happened between David and Juan. Neither of them wanted to talk to her.

"Why?" she asked, a broken tear in her voice. Goodbye four leaf clovershello gone awry"Why won't any of you talk to me anymore?" The phone switched over.

"Kris what you did to Brian was probably the lowest thing you could do," Guy's voice said. Don't cry, the fight ain't overunless you let it pass you by

"I know what I did was horrible, and I can understand why Brian won't talk to me, but why can any of you talk to me either?" I'm looking for a song to singI'm looking for a friend to borrow

"Because right now I'm on Brian's side of this. If he doesn't want me to talk to you then I won't." I'm looking for my radioso I might find a heart to follow

"Just because that bastard happens to hate me doesn't mean that all of you can drop me like that. No one will talk to me, I don't know what to do anymore! I'm a friggin outcast already, I can't be one to my own friends." I've never been just longing for your lovingI've never been just wearing down to nothing

"Why don't you just go to your other boyfriend? Isn't he everything you ever wanted?" Guy asked. Kris ran her hand over her face, trying to keep the tears in but it wasn't working. I've never been just looking for a reasonso that maybe you'd be thinking of me

"Guy I trusted you. You listened to me about all my problems and I never once thought that you'd turn your back on me like you are now. My best friends are ignoring me because me and Brian broke up. I knew it was going to ruin my friendship with him, but I didn't think it'd ruin my friendship with you." All that I have found in reasonIs reason just to not believe

"Well it did." Guy hung up the phone. Kris put her head on the desk, crying. When all that you're left is treasonIt's treason just to let it be The fear in her heart that tore away at her mind controlled her. All her friends were suddenly against her. She knew there would be an uproar. She never expected this. I'm looking for a song to singI'm looking for a friend to borrow

It was like her old life back again. When everyone hated her and everyone wanted her to drop of the face of the earth and never come back. She needed at least a bit of hope in her life, and it wasn't coming. I'm looking for my radioso I might find a heart to follow

The phone rang. She didn't want to pick it up. She didn't want to talk to anyone else. She waited for the answering machine to pick it up. I've never been just longing for you lovingI've never been just wearing down to nothing

"Hi, it's Kris, leave me a message or try my cell phone at 598-1070. Thanks!" It beeped, and an old voice came over the message. I've never been just looking for a reasonso that maybe you'd be thinking of

"Hey Kris, it's Mike. I know you're there cause you wouldn't be anywhere else. Pick up! I'm not mad at you like everyone else is, I'm more mad at Brian than at you. Come on, talk to me." Kris looked at the phone. She sighed and grabbed it. These blue yonder dreams and second hand shoesyou're so far gone that you're left to lose "Hi Mike," she said, her voice coated with the tears that ran from her eyes. Maybe he'd pose a bit of comfortor make her feel worse. And it's too late to go home all aloneYou're the tar in that old cigar

"You sound horrible." And the worn out cable on a cable carAnd you're too tired to admit you've got to choose

"Well all my supposed best friends think I'm the devil incarnate right now," she said. "Except for you, of course. I have no idea how you feel yet. So, was that message a ploy or do you really feel that way?" I'm looking for a song to singI'm looking for a friend to borrow

"No, Kris, I really feel that way. Listen, I know that Brian is my best bud and what you did sucked but there's not much I could say about it. I didn't even know you were dating until you broke up. How come you never said anything?" I'm looking for my radioso I might find a heart to follow

"Because Brian wouldn't let me," Kris said. "I wanted to proclaim it to the world that my best friend was finally my boyfriend but he didn't want anyone to know about it." She had to admit that she was happy that Mike was talking to her. Even if she wasn't the closest to him, he was still willing to take her side. I've never been just longing for you lovingI've never been just wearing down to nothing

"I just want you to know that I still want to be friends with you. You're just the victim here and you don't deserve it. I just want you to know that they're not your friends if they could be like that. I still care about you. A lot." I've never been just looking for a reasonso that maybe you'd be thinking of me
