The Buffalo or Bison
The Buffalo is one of the biggest animals roaming North America
these days. It's mighty body and protective nature makes it the center of alot of Indian folklore.
The Buffalo is a fiercly protective animal.
Winter is the most dangerous time for the buffalo. They have to guard themselves against
the cold, the predators, and starvation. staying close with the family helps guard them
from most of the dangers that winter presents.
Only in winter is when you will see a buffalo herd together, males included.
All the family ties
together to help protect mainly against the wolves and bears. This is when they get protective.
The mother's have little calves they need to protect, and they will protect their babies at
all cost. The family also helps when they can.
The rutt is a time, usually at the beginning of Spring, when male buffaloes
join together in the female herd and fight other males for the right of mating. During the rutt,
male Bison charge other male Bison with their massive horns, just for the right of mating
with a female Bison. Sometimes fatalities happen, when accidentally a horn goes through
the other Bison. The male Bison will stay with a female in heat after mating with her
to make sure none else mate with her. The female will give birth to a calf in Winter.
