Brief History of the Hong Kong Police Choir

It was the year 1977 when the Hong Kong Police Choir was established.  It all started with 10 odd male police officers who enjoyed singing and pop music and decided to band together to form the Choir.  It soon gathered momentum and the Police Force gradually accepted a singing entity in its landscape.  In 1978, owing to increasing popularity amongst its ranks, the Choir started to recruit female voices.

After some thirty years, there is a significant increase in members with four voice parts singing songs of all genres.  Beside local concerts held at various town Halls in the territory, the Hong Kong Police Choir has also been invited by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department to perform at various housing estates and new towns in the developing New Territories areas - an opportunity which is gladly seized upon to further police-community relations with great success.  The Choir also regularly performs Christmas caroling at popular shopping arcades (such as he Pacific Place, Shatin New Town Plaza) and institutions for the needy such as the Cheshire Home for the Disabled, other old folks' homes.

In a way mimicking the cosmopolitan nature of Hong Kong SAR, the Hong Kong Police Choir has over the years been invited to a number of overseas performances.  The epic tour in 1989 to perform at the *Singapore Police Carnival* still captures the fond memories of many members.  It helped cement such great bonds between police members of the two police corps so well that in 1999, the Choir had a ten year re-union with the Singapore Police with another spectacular show.  In addition, the Choir has also taken part in the *International Police Music Festival* held overseas between a number of police bodies.  The first Festival was held in Victoria, B.C., Canada in 1993; whilst the second one was held in Essex, England in 1995.  To date, many members are still keeping contacts with chaperon-cum-friends acquainted from these trips.

Since the return of sovereignty to the People's Republic of China, the Choir undertook cultural exchange with the mainland counterparts on four different occasions.  In October 2000, the Choir joined together with a few other cultural clubs and paid a visit to the great city of Foshan about 180 km north of Hong Kong.  On that occasion, many members were left with the mesmerizing experience of learning pottery skills first hand from the best experts which Foshan seemed to be teemed with, not to mention the privileged visits to various modernized police facilities in that vibrant Guangdong city.

Amidst a few return visits by our friends from Foshan, the Choir undertook another trip to Foshan in year 2001 this time performing at the then greatest hall of the city - the Golden Horse Auditorium - before a full house of fervent audience.

The Choir has since been invited to perform the Yellow River Cantata inside the Forbidden City compound at Beijing in June 2005 and participated in a competition held at Kunming, Yunnan in September 2005.  It came with no surprise that on the night after the Choir was awarded the Best Performing Group, the Kunming hotel which the Choir was staying at requested the Choir for some impromptu entertainment for benefit of its staff and other hotel guests.  The Choir literally brought down the house.

Apart from our regular rehearsal and performances, the Choir participates actively in charity events.  In May 2001, the Choir won the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up in the "We serve, We share, Civil Service for the Chest "singing competition.   To raise funds for the Hong Kong Community Chest, the Choir also participated in the "We serve, We share, Civil Service for the Chest" Charity Concert which was held on 10 June 2001.

On 29 September 2003, the Choir had held its "Silver Anniversary Jubilee Music Night" concert in  the Shatin Town Hall Auditorium.  The Hong Kong Pipe Band, Singapore Police Chorus, Foshan Bei Lei Jinsheng Choir, Foshan Gong An Choir and Tuen Mun Children Choir  graciously joined in our celebration before a thousand strong audience including the Commissioner.  It was a great success. Future, we sincerely hope to have all of you joining us in our next anniversary celebration.
