WESTERN MARYLAND SCENIC RAILROAD
On a beautiful day on Friday July 9, 2004, Charlotte and I took a ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, a round trip from Cumberland to Frostburg, Maryland.  Here are a few photos from the trip.
FILLING THE TENDER - One of the crewmen fill up the tender from the water spout at Cumberland Station a few minutes before the 11:30 departure.  The railroad runs diesel on Thursdays and steam on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
READY AND WAITING - The tender's loaded, the fire's hot, and the engineer's ready to go. In just a few minutes all the passengers will be on the train and we'll hear the conductor calling "All Aboard!"
PULLING OUT - Our train left on time, whistling a melody for the grade crossings as we left town headed for the Cumberland Narrows.
As we round the horseshoe known as Helmstetter's Curve, our engine slipped twice as it struggled to pull the train up the heavy grade and the tight curve.
BANKING THE FIRE - at the top of the hill in Frostburg, the fireman adds a few scoops of coal to the firebox so he can take a lunch break.
