BEQUIA

What began about three hundred years ago ended with my grandparents on the shores of a small, rugged island, in the middle of nowhwere. What later became known to them as Bequia or should i say the Grenadines. Growing up there I was fortunate enough to be insulated and free.

That is without a doubt the greatest gift my parents could have given me, most people would exclaim in ignorance that growing up so far away from commercialization must have been a dream, for me it never was, I always had the idea that home was a place i always wanted to depart from. I had the urge to leave as soon as i could remember.

I know that most people suffer these tremedous feelings, mine was not based on angst or hatred of my parents, no, i was based on the monotonous, non-reflective, dogmatic nature of the culture. It was stiffling, mostly i am amazed that i got out alive. I know it may seem dramatic to say this and i know it is in many cases to me, however if i focus on one really bad day it all comes running back to me. I think that i why i drifted towards books and writing, they gave me solace and worlds in which i can excape into, Aleister Crowley, Carl Jung ,Jeanette Winterson , were and still are so inspirational to me, such politics and magic and love comes to life in the brief, yellow, dry, torn pages pick me up and dress me in color and vibrance.

I guess now there is no need to argue or complain becaues my life has changed for the better. I have no resume to post that is why there is none here, i advocate and follow when i can the life of a bohemian. There is a freeness and the capacity to be happy is heightened.

This picture is taken about two minutes from my house in the islands, the beach is called belmont beach and there are a number of resorts lining the land. The beach is included in the region known as Port Elizabeth, named after The English Queen, the islands were colonized and are English in every sense, they gained their independance in the early 1980's.

Behind this beach is where i first learned to surf and sail, we also go scuba diving once or twice a week, I have since given most of them up, since i moved to New York. I return to the caribbean about once or twice a year. Now i am here i feel connected to the islands more than ever.

Another beach of distinction on Bequia is Hope Bay, which is remote, secluded, and at the end of a long foot path. This beautiful and very private beach can have some rough surf if there is an Atlantic swell, so ask some locals prior to venturing there. Do not forget to bring drinking water if you decide to beach it at Hope bay.

Bequia has a unique group of residences built entirely of stone called Moonhole. This private cluster of about 12 homes, constructed on a rock outcropping, is at the eastern most tip of the island. The original structure, (shown here) is built in a cave like setting, and is now empty. You can arrange a tour of much of this unique vacation site if you talk to the right people. Some of the residences are available for rent, but you need to be personally interviewed and approved to vacation here. Snorkeling along the rocky shore is claimed to be the best on Bequia, and the community owns a small, lovely, private beach reserved for owners and their guests. This is spectacluar to look at, there is a hole straight though the land, you can really get some amazing shots here if you are a photographer or into film.
