Kate and Anna at Floating Market
Peter and Lisa at Floating Market
The second day in Bangkok, we took a trip outside of the city to the Damnoen Floating Market.  These markets were the tradional means of selling produce and wares in small villages. Now, many of them have become big tourist spots.  Even so, it was very interesting to take a boat through the markets.  We got to try some delicious pad thai, coconut pancakes, and rice cooked in bamboo with sweet coconut milk.  Yummy!

On the way back to Bangkok, we stopped at Nakorn Pathom Temple which is suppose to have the largest pagoda in Thailand.  Here, our guide, showed the girls how to fold lotus flowers to make them more beautiful before placing them before the Buddha.

Our last day in Bangkok, we toured the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo.  The Grand Palace houses the Emerald Buddha and at one time was home for the royal family. The complex is made up of a series of buildings, all in different styles.  In the picture below, the gold building is a Sri Lankan-style chedi (a solid structure encasing what is believed to a piece of the Buddha's breastbone), a mondrop (library), and the Royal Pantheon with a mixture of a Khmer bullet shapped prang and more traditional Thai architecture with the pointed roof finials.
