| Bangkok is a really cosmopolitan city. We had noticed during our stay in Pattaya and in Bangkok that it was easier to buy American food here than anywhere in the Netherlands. At night, street markets and merchants spring up from everywhere. During the day, tuk-tuks, or small taxis, weave in and out of the traffic. There are tons of shopping malls in Bangkok and you could easily come here just to shop. Our guide told us that there are over 400 temples in Bangkok, enough to visit a new one each day. We only hit the major temples and we were amazed by their beauty. Also new to us, was the active worship of Buddhism. The Thai people appear quite religious and their form of Buddhism seems very superstitious. At all the temples, there were machines that look a bit like slot machines, with which you could get your fortune for a small donation. If your fortune is a bad one, you are instructed to pay a bit more and purchase oil for the lamps or lotus flowers for the Buddha. On our first night in Bangkok, we attended a Classical Thai dinner and dance at the Oriental Hotel. When we arrived at the dock to take the boat over to the restaurant, our guide looked down and noticed our feet as we stepped out of the van. The girls were wearing dressy flipflops and I had on low heeled sandals. She was so sorry, but our shoes would not be accepted in the restaurant. After some quick discussion, we were whisked away to a local, fairly cheap, department store where we quickly purchased some new sandals for the girls (mine in the long run were fine). We rushed back to the dock, quickly took a boat to the restaurant to arrive just in time. As we entered the restaurant, the first thing we were requested to do was give up our shoes, since we needed to be barefooted in the restaurant! We still are not sure what was going on there, but it was pretty funny at the time. The first day of touring in Bangkok, we visited Wat Traimit with the Golden Buddha. This is a solid gold, 13 foot high, 5 ton Buddha from the 13th century. Really impressive. Next at Wat Pho, we walked along the 150 foot reclinine Buddha. Every temple was bright and beautiful. A huge contrast to the stone work of Angkor Wat, which was beautiful in a different way. |

After touring in the morning, Peter and I went back out on our own to explore. We had the good forturne of being kidnapped by a tuk-tuk driver. Tuk-tuks are open-air 3 wheeled small taxis. We had taken a tuk-tuk ride the day before without any problem with Anna. This afternoon, we took one because we were informed that China Town was "closed" due to the holidays. We negotiated a ride to a shopping mall where we wanted to go in the evening with the girls. On the way, we were taken to about 4 other shops and one sightseeing spot that was not on the original plan. The driver kept saying just one more stop because he would get free gas credits by bringing us by the stores. By the end, we basically jumped out of the tuk-tuk when we were close enough to our destination since our driver was still insisting on "one more stop". | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
