| 2004-2005 GIRLS OUTLOOK With the loss of Hogans most notirized athletes of Jessica Robles and Times Herald Athlete of the Year Ereenie Belamide. The Spartans are coming off a remarkable 2004 wrestling season as they became Region II Girls Wrestling Champions by upsetting #1 ranked Vallejo by one point in the tournament and having a strong 5th place showing at the State Championship tournament. But those days have long gone, as the Spartans lose most of its fire power to graduation. Team captains Marissa Gonzales and Ann Libranda are returning state placers. They will continue to lead the path where our seniors have left off. Currently ranked #3 in the Regionals and ranked #7 in the State of California, Hogan has much poise in becoming a threat in the state. The Spartans return 7 out of 12 members of the Championship team and 4 state qualifiers from the 7 it had sent to the state tournament. We are expecting big things from our girls. It is so exciting to watch as these young ladies execute their skills on the mat. Catherine Villalon and Krystalle Alcantara have improved so much last year and will make a very big impact this season. "We are expecting great things from our girls program. They have come a long way in a short amount of time. We are so proud of them." Four state placers return this season in Marisa Gonzales, Ann Libranda, Erin Russell and Jessica Ortiz. Winning championships take a team effort and with these talented individuals, they are in fact the key ingredient for the Spartans to reach the next level. These ladies have been training the new recuirts for their upcoming competition. We look forward to their contributions. |
| MAKING AN EXAMPLE While your average high school girl is going shopping or hanging out with their friends, a young lady named Jessica Ortiz had other plans. Approached by her coaches to excel to the next level, she took the necessary steps needed to become a champion. "She brings great intensity and a real fighting spirit to the mat, her presence makes you work that much harder." Her dedication has propelled her to one of the states premier athletes. She has won the Far Western Freestyle tournament and was the Cadet Girls Fresstyle State runner-up for California. She then went onto Fargo, North Dakato where she was a member of the California National team and becoming National Team Champions. Last year, Hogan had three individuals compete at the National level, with 2 of those athletes gone to graduation, Ortiz is the only wrestler who returns with national experience. She has taken the responsibilty as a true leader, the influence will motivate her teammates. We are proud to have this little stubborn girl on our side. |
