Rob looks at Mandy. He tries to operate the time machine, but the heavy gun fire causes him to pause. He whispers to Mandy, "If we try to leave now, we'll probably get shot." They decided to try to wait it out.
Fast forward to the present, the day before they went to the library. Mandy and Rob are talking to each other in school. Mandy asked "Do you know what we should do for our school project?"
