The Health Hazards and Risks Presented By Asbestos
Exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of several serious diseases:

Asbestosisa chronic lung ailment that can produce shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage.

Lung cancer

Mesotheliomaa relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen.

Other cancers--such as those of the larynx, oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney.

Smoking can increase the risk of these disaeses 50% or more.
Symptons of asbestos-related disaeses
* Shortness of breath;

* A cough or a change in cough pattern;

* Blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up from the lungs;

* Pain in the chest or abdomen;

* Difficulty in swallowing or prolonged hoarseness; and/or

* Significant weight loss.
These symptoms can take between 10 and 30 years, or even longer, to develop to the point where the disease can be diagnosed. It is usually associated with exposure to blue asbestos. Cases have developed where exposure has been only very brief, or where the quantity of airborne asbestos was very small.
