Chanson de Roland
Date Description Source Reference
Early 13th century. A single conical tent, some green colouring on two of the panels, the panels are clearly defined, one member of the detail holds the pole upright, another drives in the hooked topped pegs in to hold the bottom edge, while another chap holds a rope connected to the tent’s apex. “As a company of Crusader knights rides into camp, a work detail pitch a tent in this illustration from an early 13th century French manuscript. While the knights enjoyed the relative comfort of such tents, the common soldiers often had to make do with shelters made from bushwood.”

“British Library, MS Landsdowne 782 fol. 34v-35.”
