Early Settlers
At the house of George King in the new County of Monroe , seventeen hundred and nine nine and of the Common Wealth of Virginia the twenty third, a Commissioner of the Peace, John Hutchison, John Gray, John Byrnside, William Graham, James Hanly and William Vawter, Gentlemen who produced and read and thereupon the siad William Hutchison took the oath appointed by the Constitution of the United States also the oaths of a Justice of the Peace and of a Justice of the County Court in Chancery which were administered to him by the siad James Alexander and William  Haynes, and then the said William Hutchison administerd the said oaths to said James Alexander, Isaac Estill, William Haynes, John Hutchison, John Gray, John Brynside, William Graham, James Hanly and William Vawter.

A Commission from the Governor to Isaac Estill, Gentleman to be Sheriff of he County of Monroe was produced by the said Isaac Estill and read and thereupon he together with James Alexander, William Haynes, and John Byrnside, Gentlemen his securities entered into and acknowledged two bonds for the due execution of his office also a bond for the due collection and payment of the public taxes which are ordered to be recorded and then the said Isaac Estill took the oath appointed by Act of Assembly for giving assurance of Fidelity to the Commonwealth the oath for support of the Constitution of the United States and was sworn Sheriff of the said County.

Court held for the County of Monroe at the house of George King on Tuesday the twenty first day of May 1799 in the Twenty third year of the Common Wealth of Virginia.  Present:  William Hutchison William Haynes, John Gray,  William Graham, William Vawter, James Alexander, Joh Hutchison, John Byrnside,  and James Hanly Gentlean Justices

Ordered that the Court adjorn from the dwelling house of George King to his barn forCommission----
John Hutchison being appointed Clerk of this Court and having given bond for security according to law, took the oath appointed by law for giving assurance of Fidelity to the Common Wealth the oath for supporting the Constitution of the United States and was sworn Clerk of the Court.

John Woodward, Gentlemen produced a License to practice the law in the Superior and Inferior Courts of the Common Wealth and thereupon he took the oath appointed by law for giving assurance of Fidelity to the Common Wealth the oath forsuporting the Constitution of the United States also the oath of Counsel or attorney and permitted to practice in this County.

Ordered that a license be granted to John Wallace to keep an ordinary in this house for a term of one year now next ensuing and from thence untill the Court he compling with what the law in this case requires.


Ordered that license be granted to James Alexander, Gent. to keep an ordinary at his house in the County for the term of one year now next ensuing and from thence until the next court he complying with what the law in this case requires.

John Byrnside, Gent is recommended to the Governor as a proper person to execute the office of Surveyor of this County.


John Arbuckle having taken the oath appointed by law for giving assurance of Fidelity to the Common Wealth the oath for supporting the Constitution of the United States was on the motion of  Isaac Estill, Gent. Sheriff of this County sworn and admitted as his under Sheriff.

Ordered that the Court be adjorned till tomorrow 12:0'clock.  The minutes of these proceedings was signed.  William Hutchison,  Teste: John Hutchison, Clerk.
