| "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit." Ephesians 2:19-22 In Mark 12, Jesus said, "Have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner." The cornerstone, to most of us, is the stone which tells us when a building was erected. But when the Bible refers to a cornerstone, it refers to the first stone laid for the foundation. The builders would get a stone from the quarry and chisel it carefully to get as near a right angle as possible. They would measure the placement of all the other stones against that cornerstone, that first measuring stone. It was the standard by which all the walls of the building were determined. However, when Jesus refers to Himself as being the chief corner stone, I believe God is saying to us, "I measure everything by Jesus Christ." He is our foundation ~ He is unmovable, never changing, and our solid rock! I have heard of some churches called Cornerstone this or that., but all church building structures are fitly framed together for God's assembly to gather and worship and praise Him. The building itself is not the cornerstone ~ Christ is the cornerstone! For God's household is not a building, but rather a group of believing people. God lives in us and shows Himself through us to a watching world. Application: The church is not built on modern ideas, but rather on the spiritual heritage given to us by the early apostles and prophets of the Christian church. We are members of His household and citizens of God's Kingdom. As we live in harmony with one another and in accordance with what God says in His Word, others will see that God is love and that Christ is Lord. May God bless you with a wonderful day as you assemble together on the chief cornerstone. Love in Christ, Sandy |
