"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. . . " II Corinthians 2:14-16
This week I have been working in the cosmetics department at my job place. I have been around all kinds of "sweet smelling" products. I have had customers ask me to open our expensive perfume case and sample perfumes costing more than an elaborate dinner! They would come right out and ask me if this or that perfume smelled good on them. Yesterday that sweet-smelling perfume followed me home. As it did, it brought this scripture to mind.
Most people care about what others think of their appearance and particular odor. Americans I imagine, spend billions of dollars each year on perfumes and colognes. But these products only fix a person up from the neck up! I say, if you really want something to make you smell pleasant, here it is: As a true believer, when everyone comes around, allow them to get a good whiff of Christ!
The believer, with knowledge of and who lives in Christ, emits the very smell of Christ's sweet sacrifice. We cannot buy it in a bottle, nor would we want to. It does not ooze out of our pores ~ it comes out in our attitudes, actions and words! That sweet smell affects everybody around us!
Application:
It might really not be a bad idea to ask yourself, "What do I really smell like?" If you know Christ, then you know your life smells good. And only then will you naturally make a difference to people around you. "For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ!"
