B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 16 (Continued)

B'resheet 16:7-11 Now the angel of the L-RD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai." Then the angel of the L-RD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority." Moreover, the angel of the L-RD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they shall be too many to count." The angel of the L-RD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son; and you shall call his name Yishma'el (Ishmael), because the L-RD has given heed to your affliction.

Shur - She was heading back to Egypt. The name "Shur" means "the wall" This is a wall of fortresses at the boarder of Egypt.

The Angel of the L-rd - See our study for a quick review.

The 16th Hebrew letter corresponding to this chapter is Ayin - eye; spiritual insight.

We see this from two characters: The first character is "the angel of the L-rd".

I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they shall be too many to count." - Hagar is the mother the Arab people.

Notice that the angel says "I WILL" not "G-d will". Hmmm....

Hagar is commanded to: RETURN to her mistress ... and SUBMIT to her authority.

G-d did not want Hagar to take the easy way out and run from her problem. She needed to go home and submit to Sarai. Hagar needed to work on her attitude. Running from our problems is not the solution, we need G-d's help to face our problems and ask Him for His help.

G-d still blessed Abram and would bless all nations through Abram.

Abram is the father of two groups of uncountable descendants the children of the Bond Woman, Hagar, and the children of the free woman, Sarai.

The following passage tells us whom Sarai and Hagar represent.

Galatians 4:21-31 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. This is allegorically speaking: for these women are two covenants, one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor; For more are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband." And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman." So then, brothers, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman.

So the question we need to ask ourselves is this: Am I a child of the bondwoman, trying to get to the earthly Yerushalayim or am I a child of the free woman inheriting the New Yerushalayim in Heaven above?

"The Angel of the L-rd" makes a prophecy about Ishmael:

B'resheet 16:12 "And he will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; and he will live to the east of all his brothers."

Is this not true of the Arab's today?

Again the word of G-d shown to be true.

B'resheet 16:13 Then she called the name of the L-RD who spoke to her, "You are a G-d who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?"

Here is how this verse reads in "The Complete Jewish Bible"

B'resheet 16:13 So she named ADONAI who had spoken with her "El Ro'I [G-d of seeing], because she said, "Have I really seen the One who sees me [and stayed alive]?"

Who did Hagar see and still remained alive? Surely you know.

Do you have spiritual insight?

One is not suppose to be able to look at G-d and live. His glory was again hidden. He is the hidden Alph and the Tahv (truth). We saw this happen with Adam and Eve, and we see this with Hagar. We also will see this again when He comes to visit Abram accompanied by angels later on.

He is Adonai in v. 11 and He sees her affliction.

How do we know it was a theophany? An angel cannot increase her descendants so that they shall be too many to count. Now can they?

.Hagar our second character with spiritual insight.

She also realizes this is G-d and states this in v. 13. If this fact in v 13 were not true an angel would surely have rebuked the notion by her. Yishma'el's (Ishmael's) name further clarifies it. His name means - "G-d hears."

There are some of all nations who believe in Yeshua and yes believe He is G-d and pay dearly for it. These are those who know the Father and the one true G-d. Ishmael's mother knew Him and knows Him today.

B'resheet 16:14 Therefore the well was called Be'er-lachai-Ro'i; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Be'er-lachai-Ro'i - The well of the living one who sees me

B'resheet 16:15-16 So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. NAS
