Radio and television are controlled directly by the
government and are required to reflect government policies.
Television
Sudan National Broadcasting Corporation (SNBC) - government-run, operates
two channels, also available via satellite.
There are no privately-owned TV broadcasters, apart from a
cable service jointly owned by the government and private investors. Satelllite dishes are becoming common in affluent areas and pan-Arab TV
stations are popular among viewers.
Radio
Sudan National Radio Corporation - government-run, national and regional
networks in Arabic, English and several other languages.
The government operates Sudan's domestic radio services,
which broadcast a mixture of news, music and cultural programmes. Private
stations are not permitted. Foreign radio stations are also heard in Sudan,
including the BBC World Service and Paris-based Radio Monte Carlo, which
operate on FM in Khartoum. Several opposition and clandestine radio stations
broadcast to Sudan.
The press
The privately-owned press enjoys a greater degree of freedom
than the state broadcasters, but the state retains and uses powers to
influence what is published. |
