Hillsview Farm Flock History
Lambs 2008
For Sale
Hillsview Farm was started with a foundation flock of Dorset
ewes purchased in 1974 by Robert and Virginia Hughes, as well
as thier children: Michael, Carolyn, Robert, Mary, Tom, and
James. This flock began with 4 Daudt Ewes and a Ram bred by
H.F. Sanford and Sons. During the future years, different ewes
were selected from Sanford and other MN breeders, with the
emphasis of building strong breed character, good carcass merit,
and good overall thickness and frame-size. After the construction
of the base-ewe flock, we have stayed very true to our own breeding, with the exception of a few ewes and stud rams.
Soon after the building of the Dorset flock, the need arose to incorporate the Suffolk breed into the program to produce superior market lambs capable of doing well in the  ring and on the rail. So, we purchased a few Suffolk ewes from various MN breeders in 1979 and moved the farm to a new location to better accomodate the growing flock. Much like the Dorsets, we have remained loyal to our own breeding, with the exception of stud rams. We also experimented with the Hampshire breed in 1983.
Today Hillsview farm consists of nearly 45 Purebred Suffolk and Dorset ewes. The farm is run with the help of Robert and Virginia's daughter: Carolyn Heinonen, her husband: James, and their three kids: Amanda, Joe and Evan. The kids are heavily involved in 4-H and FFA,
and show many county fairs, as well as the MN State Fair.
with mostly Caskey breeding. However, we eliminated the flock from our program in 1996, after the kids had gone, due to limited space and labor.
Amanda has been a large part of the decion making process for the past 7 years, and is now the flock shepard, along with some help from brother Joe. Summers are spent traveling East Central MN shows, so stop by and see us, we'd love to chat about sheep!
