Page 9. Everest June 2, 2003 Nar was at our door at 5:00 am. He wanted to use our bathroom to wash up and then pack, Laurie and I were awake. I am pretty much awake at 5:00 anyways because I go to bed early.
Laurie and I got up and packed. Most of my stuff was already packed last night. I had to stuff my sleeping bag in. I used it last night because the bed felt itchy. Didn't want to leave there with bugs.
Laurie and I had a quick bite to eat and then went to the airport which was 10 feet away, door to door. Nar was there in line with our bags. He was suppose to be able to check the bags in starting at 7:00 am. I don't think they started til 7:45. He explained it as Nepali time. We really didn't have a set time to leave I guess, just when ever the planes flew in from Kathmandu, We thought we were suppose to leave at 8:00, but it wasn't til about 9:15 that we left. The flight was a little smoother than the flight over, but was cloudy and couldn't see anything
We landed safely, got our bags, got a taxi, and arrived at the hotel about 10:30. Thank goodness for Nar to handle all of the taxi people. We just follow him.
We dropped off our laundry. We wore these clothes for 13 days without washing. I hated the thoughts of touching them.
Nar left us to go home and we made arrangements to meet afterwards. Laurie and I settled in our room and went to the internet to make contact with family and friends to let them know we were OK and to make sure they were OK.
Nar met us and we walked to Thai Airways to see if we could change our flight. It was closed for lunch so we went to a Baskin Robbins for ice cream. Ice cream from home! Yippee!! The ice cream I had here was icy and grainy, horrible.
We walked back to Thai Airways. Lucky to be in one piece because we had to cross the street with crazy drivers. Thai Airways didn't have any openings to leave earlier than we had scheduled, but said there might be an opening so he told us to come back tomorrow. They are really good there. They will change your flight and not even charge you!
We then walked to the Kathmandu Guest House and had something to drink. We go there because we like the atmosphere. It is set in away from the street and they have a terrace garden to sit at. Very peaceful and relaxing.
From there Laurie went back to the room. I went back to the internet. I wanted to respond to people that wrote. I make an effort to write people hoping they will write back. I love hearing from people because it makes me feel like I am close to home. I miss everyone and being apart of what they are doing. I hate to miss out on any fun. Sometimes I think about going home, but I couldn't give up this opportunity that I have. I also think about occassionally, what I will do when I go back. I still have a long way to go and so many things can happen in the meantime. I just tell myself, enjoy today, worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Since tomorrow never comes I don't have to worry.
Laurie and I went back to the Kathmandu Guest House for dinner. I had steak, potato, and vegetables for about $3.00 and it was delicious. It amazes me how cheap everything is here.
After dinner, back to the internet. You would think I don't have anything to do. Well I don't really and it does take a long time to write everyone.
I went back to the room. Laurie had all of her stuff spread out. We are both wondering how we are going to pack everything in our packs. We seem to be collecting more and more stuff. I watched TV for awahile. It is so nice to have good lighting and a TV. Now I don't have to go to bed at 8:00 at night.
June 3, 2003 Today was a busy, but relaxing day. After breakfast Laurie and I went to the internet--yes--I think I live there. We were waiting for Thai Airways to open at 9:00.
We walked to Thai Airways and they were able to change our flight to London. We are leaving tomorrow.
From there Laurie and I roamed the streets on our own. We met up again at the hotel. We went to the Kathmandu Guest House for lunch. I feel like their best customer. We went back to the hotel so we could try to fit everything in our packs. I had to buy another bag to put stuff in.
Nar met us at 5:30 at the hotel. We were taking him for dinner since it was our last night. Before dinner we stopped at the internet place. Their computers have MSN instant messenger, so I was actually able to have a conversation by email with a friend of mine. It is pretty neat to be able to do that. Less expensive than a phone bill.
For dinner we went to the Thamel House. It was a neat place. Tables low to the ground, you sit on pillows on the floor. The Thamel House specializes in Napali food. I am not too keen on the food, but it was OK to eat.
Nar liked it there. I think he prefers Nepali food. We had a nice time.
We gave Nar his tip and I felt sad to be leaving him. He is a good, kind person who has had a tough life. I wish him well.
Again I went back to the internet because Laurie said her picture from the Annapurna trek were up. Wanted to check them out. There are some good ones, but the pictures of the scenery don't do it justice. The mountains don't look so big. I can't wait to see mine. I didn't take as many as Laurie because sometimes I was just too lazy to get the camera out. I also figured I could always get copies on line.
Well folk that's it for Nepal. London here we come. |
