General Pre-Game commitments from both game master and player
Game Master's Commitment
At the start of the game and the accepting of an application from a gamer, I give a personal commitment to [Free of Charge] provide an enjoyable game for the player. I will see the game through until the character's death or his victory in "the game."
Roleplayer's Commitment
From the player, to the best of their ability, I expect the player to do all in their power to see their character through the game. Sometimes extenuating circumstances call for a player's availibility and/or participation to be delayed. Allowances will always be made for people in such situations. I expect the player to consider other options before abandoning their character for it negatively effects myself, other players and most specifically the game as a whole. In other words make sure you want to play before you sign up.
What is Highlander about?
Highlander is a fantasy story about a rare and unknown stock of humans granted a partial immortality. These immortals can not be killed by any death except decapitation. The immortals are not super human and do not have any magical or superhuman abilities save an excelled immunity system and heeling factor.
The legends and traditions of the immortals is to do combat amongst themselves. They battle with blades in an attempt to behead another immortal and gain their life force through the quickening.
It is believed that one day when only a few immortals remain, they will feel an irresistable pull to a far away land to do final battle. This is called the time of the Gathering. The last man (or woman) standing will be awarded the prize. What the prize is, is a matter of rumor.
What are the 'rules' of this Highlander world?
This section is very important!!
We are playing by MOVIE rules.
a) Immortals can die only by decapitation
b) When an immortal suffers equal damage that would kill a mortal, the immortal temporarily "dies" until the body can heel itself from its injuries.
c) The amount of time of temporary death is determined by how violent a death the immortal receives. Average time is approximately 20 minutes.
d) Immortals at no point (including time as a pre-immortal) can bare children. They shoot "blanks."
e) Immortals sense each other from about 50 to 100 feet away on average. They power of the immortal is a minor influence. (Note: It is random enough that you will not be able to measure out how far it is for future instances.)
f) Immortals can breath under water. They will not drown and can hold semi-conversations under water.
g) Immortals can not regenerate limbs; though they can regenerate things like their heart, brain, etc. though it takes a little while. Teeth and very minor bone structures can be heeled.
h) Immortals can not get sick.
i) Immortals are subject to medicines, poisons and exhaustion.
j) Decapitation must occur between the shoulder blades and spinal cord as it enters the back of the neck.
k) If an immortal is cut in half, they will go unconscience until someone takes their head.
l) Immortals stop growing at the time of their first unnatural death.
m) If an pre-immortal died of "old age," they would permanately die.
n) Fighting on holy ground is forbidden. Try it and see what happens.
o) Double teaming an immortal is forbidden. Two immortals to a fight.
p) When you "die" for the first time, this usually takes a few hours for you to heal back up. You never officially "die," you are just so near it that everyone would assume you'll be "dead" in a matter of mere moments. You would NEVER flatline.
Important Rules
Here is the basics of how the game will run. When the game starts, all immortals who will take place in the game will move to the city named Marna.
You will have a web page that I create for you with your status. It will have your current living address, how much money you have (both in your wallet and your bank account and all), friends you can contact, your work schedule (assuming you have a job), just about all that sort of info and you will need to manage. I anticipate having a lot of people playing so you will have to manage your money and property, I won't do it. I'll take your money when you spend it and do as you request, I won't play for you.
Everyone will start off of equal power. If you have a 4,000 year old immortal who knows 800 languages and 300 martial arts, you can still just as easily be killed by a 19 year old immortal in the beginning as a 8,000 year old immortal. Don't think just because you spiced your immortal up in every way in the application that your going to have a huge advantage on everyone. This is so everyone can have fun and create realistic characters and everyone won't be competing to see who can create the coolest Terminator. This game was made very strictly for my entertainment as well as yours.
*Periodically I will post an update for your character on your personal web page that I create for you. If you choose to go to a place during the week and another immortal is there at the same time, I will send both of you emails notifying you that you have sensed another immortal and both of you will tell me what you wish to do about it. You guys can fight, you can talk and be friends, plan out a fight / meeting place for another time or whatever you want to do.
Updates
*You must send me some sort of plans once a week.
THINGS YOU NEED TO TELL ME
-You must tell me what you want to do with your life in that week.
-Where do you plan on eating during the week?
-Do you need to have work done on your car?
-Are you going shopping for any reasons? (Groceries, food or casual shopping)
-Where are you going to hang out?
-Do you plan on attending work or school or whichever at all scheduled times.
-Most importantly you need to tell me when you are going to these places, what your going to do about your sword. If you work at a grocery store, you can't bag groceries and have your sword on you at the same time. So what will you do? Let me know all that kind of things.
-Are you going to try to better relationships with certain people?
-Everything else that is important that I didn't think to name.
If you have more questions about this stuff, e-mail me.
More Rules
*You cannot use other people in your story without their permission.
*You do not tell me what happens in your weekly update, you simply tell me how and what you would like to do during the week. Maybe some goals you'd like to work towards. You also should tell me what your going to do about your sword situation every place you wish to go.
*You can try anything you want to, but you can also be thrown in jail or beaten up or anything because of your actions, so think before you try something. If you are a convicted murderer, even if you escape out of jail, most people who watch the news will recognize you. Be careful.
SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! PLEASE READ!!!!
*I will NOT stop you from using guns. HOWEVER, I can not emphasis enough how much we look down upon people who go around and shoot people. I do not speak only from an in character's perspective, but as a roleplayer's perspective. Many roleplayers have worked very hard to become power in previous games only to be killed by a coward roleplayer with a gun. The story of the immortals as we have all known it is about sword fights. Not gun fights. Unless you are just really determined to do it, I speak on part of almost every roleplayer when I ask you to consider alternative ideas to gun-toting immortals.
Throwing knives are allowed and so are shuriken if you are a ninja. If you aren't a ninja, don't use shuriken.
Game limits (Does, don'ts and suggestions)
Things to do
1. Create a long term character. The game is aiming at being a long-term game so do not create a character you will get bored with after a month or two.
2. Make an original character. Try to come up with a type of character who hasn't been played dozens of times before. It makes for more interesting story.
3. Play an interesting character. Try to think of a character we are all going to want to learn more about; one that asks a lot of questions. The more interesting you are (typically not always), the least likely someone's going to want to kill you. Though sometimes it can backfire, so be careful.
4. Have a good story behind your character. Try to think of something again, that is going to grab our interests. Give me a good background and an interesting story to help build your character.
5. If you wish to play a historical figure, you are allowed as long as they were not beheaded historically. Read "Things NOT to do" for some people you cannot play.
Things NOT to do
1. Don't create a character who relies on guns or projectile weapons. I've had the last two game's final result be the result of gun use. Roleplayers are tired of cheap, lazy and unoriginal roleplayers "copping out" and using a gun to either make their immortal powerful or insure their survival. In the TV series almost NOBODY used guns. In the original movie NOBODY used guns. Shooting immortal who is trying to FORCE you into a fight is one thing; showing up to an agreed fight and shooting him is another.
2. Try to be true to your character's origin. Don't use a katana if you aren't Asian or didn't spend a lot of time in Asia. Be original (see "Things to Do" #2).
3. Do your posts and strategies when I request them. Typically I let slide a post or two, but if you do not do a strategy when it is due, you automatically die. Don't screw that up.
4. Don't take a long time with responses. Other players are often waiting on you to respond to something for them to move on with their scenes. Try to be quick.
5. Do not play one of the following historical figures; and do not play a character who was beheaded historically.
a) Alexander the Great (already been played)
b) Arnold Scwharzenegger (already been played)
c) Billy the Kid (already been played)
d) Keith Hamilton (already been played)
e) Erik Bloodaxe (already been played)
f) Judas Iscariot (already been played)
g) Genghis Kahn (beheaded historically)
h) Vlad the Impaler (beheaded historically)
i) Musolini (beheaded historically)
j) William Wallace (beheaded historically)
Suggestions
1. Use a weapon sized for your immortal. If you are a female, don't use a broadsword because it will slow you down. If you are 6 feet 8 inches tall, and weigh about 300 pounds, don't use a light rapier or Tai Chi. Use something that will compliment your physical stats.
2. Watch out for cheap immortals. Even though I'm encouraging fair play, there are always going to be some evil immortals who will take your head while you are on the can or worse. Be careful
3. Don't wait until the last day to roleplay. Its quite often that your computer crashes or a file gets lost or something and you have to come whine to me about your bad fortune. Typically I feel bad for you but when I know its because you waited till the last second, I don't work with you. Sometimes I will in some circumstances but by no means expect me to do so. Not to mention, a good strategy takes more than an hour to do; that is why I give you a week.
4. Ask questions. If you are confused about something, ask. If are even curious about how to do something better; ask. It is the best way to learn and I certainly don't mind answering questions. I'm generally glad you are interested.
5. Don't lose your head.
If you have read and understood these previous bits of information, you are ready to move on and start!
