Bevan's Dance Collection
This is a collection of dances that I have composed over the years. I compose because I like to create and enjoy dancing. I have written many dances of varying quality, and am now starting to compose music - I will soon post some of my favourite tunes. The dances are not aimed at a particular group, but if you are not experienced and fit then many of them may present insurmountable challenges! I believe that the terminology in the descriptions will be fairly widely understood by current dancers; it is similar to that used by the RSCDS. If you have not danced before, then I advise you to join your local class. All these dances are Copyright Bevan Marchand 1998-2006. Permission is granted to freely reproduce and distribute, providing no charge is made. I hope you enjoy them!

What is Scottish Dancing?
The most frequent question I get asked about Scottish Dancing is "what is it?"! Scottish Country Dancing is a sort of cross between the sort of dances you do at Barn Dances or Ceilidhs and Ballet Dancing. Scottish Highland Dancing is macho dancing - which most people think is over swords - and like aerobics. There are also the more obscure step dances and island (Shetland or Hebridean) dances. The best site for finding out more is the Grand Chain Scottish Dance site.
The important thing is that it is all a lot of fun - the best advice I can give you is to try it and find out what it is!

Celtic Music
One of the best things about Scottish Dances is dancing to the fantastic music, whether played by pipes, piano or accordion and fiddle band. I love this so much that I am going to teach myself the accordion to be able to play it. I have the essential Anzaghi Accordion tutor! My latest music purchase is a 3CD boxed set by the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, called Fiddlers Connections. This is very clean Scottish country music with fantastic depth and I would highly recommend it for listening, and maybe dancing.

Dancing History
I started dancing in October 1997 and haven't stopped! I learned to dance at the Oxford University Scottish Dance Society, and owe much of my ability to the quality teaching I received. Another group I danced at is the RSCDS Oxfordshire Branch, which shares the teachers who teach the University Group.
I currently live in London, dance and teach at the Chiswick SCD Club and dance with the London RSCDS Branch. I took up Highland Dancing a year after country, and have intermittantly taken this up again, most recently dancing with the Janet Cook school of Highland Dancing. I am a registered SOBHD dancer and started my career at the Harrow festival in 2003.
I also dance for the Corryvrechan display team.

I am a member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and first went to summer school in 1999. I loved the floor of the Younger Hall and the atmosphere, and was honoured in being invited to dance in the demonstration. I also appreciated the high quality teaching. My favourite memories are of dancing on the beach at 1 o'clock in the morning!

The highlights of my dancing career have been the trips abroad: to Sardinia and France with Corryvrechan and to Portugal with the OUSDS. It is fantastic to see the national dancing of other countries as well as to perform in front of very large and appreciative crowds. I still dance for Corryvrechan, the team I was invited to join in December 1999. If you get the opportunity to see us, it's well worth a trip!

Happy Dancing!

Rainbow Bridge 1x128M Square Set
Written for lots of people I know will enjoy it for different reasons.
1-8 All dancers face their partner, and dance a Grand Chain as if all the way round (1 hand to 1 bar). On the final left hand, the men turn the ladies by the left hand into the centre, to end in a cross shape with the men facing anti-clockwise and the ladies clock wise. 1st man is in his own place holding left hands with 2nd lady.
9-12 The ladies take right hands in a cross and set advancing using pas de basque, while the men dance on 1 place anti-clockwise. All dancers turn the person they meet once round by the left hand.
13-16 The ladies take right hands in a cross and set advancing using pas de basque, while the men dance on 1 place anti-clockwise. All dancers turn the person they meet once round by the left hand. Men should now be in the opposite place to where they started the dance, with their partners in the centre 1 place to their right. Ladies face out (so 2nd lady faces 1st man).
17-24 Ladies set to the man they are facing, then pulling their left shoulder back, petronella one place on anti-clockwise to the outside of the set. They repeat this movement to end in the centre of the set, facing the next man anti-clockwise. They dance the whole of this movement again. Men set using any strathspey time highland step.
25-32 Ladies set to the man they are facing, then pulling their left shoulder back, petronella one place on anti-clockwise to the outside of the set. They repeat this movement to end in the centre of the set, facing the next man anti-clockwise. They dance the whole of this movement again. The final time, instead of the petronella movement, they dance out to end beside their partners. Men set using any strathspey time highland step. All end in opposite place to where they started the dance.
33-36 1st and 3rd couples make arches. 2nd lady and 4th man take nearer hands with 1st couple, 2nd man and 4th lady take nearer hands with 3rd couple. The ends of the lines thus formed dance round, and taking hands dance under the arch, and back to place. On the last 2 bars of this movement, the standing couple turn under the arch themselves, to untie the knot.
37-40 2nd and 4th couples make arches. 3rd lady and 1st man take nearer hands with 2nd couple, 3rd man and 1st lady take nearer hands with 4th couple. 51-52 2nd man, 3rd lady, 4th man and 1st lady set; 1st man with 2nd lady, and 3rd man with 4th lady change places across the set by the left hand.

65-128 The dance is repeated in reel time. In bars 81-96 (corresponding to bars 17-32), the ladies dance hello-goodbye setting all the way round the set. On final 4 bars, they set to beside their partner and then set on the spot. The men set using any reel time highland step.
