Chapter 15: Frozen Tears

We laid Hiei on the couch. Might as well let him sleep there. We couldn’t leave him in a tree! But Kuwabara seemed intent on that idea though.
I knelt beside Hiei and began to dress his arm again. Yusuke, Kuwabara and Kurama quietly slipped out of the room to drink some of Kurama’s homemade tea. I looked at Hiei’s face. He was smiling! Hiei was actually smiling. He looked so innocent like a sleeping baby. Wow! He’s kawaii when he’s not mad at the world! Hmmm, maybe he’s not so bad after all…
As I finished dressing his arm I noticed that the expression on his face had changed. His face was uptight and sweat was pouring over his face. No. Something wasn’t right. Hiei began to toss and turn violently. I felt his forehead. Aaaah! It was hot! I knew he was a fire demon but this could not be normal. “Kurama!” I called.
Kurama quickly analyzed Hiei’s condition. “How is he?” I asked anxiously. “Not good.” he answered grimly. “The poison has started to invade his body but it is curable.” I sighed in relief “Thank goodness!” “But I need time to work on an antidote. Yusuke come and assist me. Botan stay with him.” “Hai!” I said obediently.
I watch him twist and turn. I could see his condition getting worse. I started to cry. Oh no! Hiei hang in there! Where are you Kurama? I thought as I rose determined to drag Kurama in here and make Hiei feel better. Just as I neared the door < Wait! Don’t leave me too..> What? Who said that? I looked around the room finally my eyes fell on Hiei. It couldn’t be. He was out cold but it did sound like him. I approached him slowly. Hiei? No response. But now he was shivering! Shaking so violently that the couch was shaking too. Oh no! He’s getting worse! I quickly ran and got some blankets. I pulled them over him. < I feel so cold. So alone.> Was I going nuts? I held Hiei as to keep him warm but he still continued shivering. I prayed silently hoping that Hiei would pull through. < Maybe I deserved to be alone. By myself forever left in the cold> Yes there was definitely a voice talking if not to me. < Look at me! How could anyone love me, you were right to hit me, Bo tan> It was Hiei! Only his voice seemed different. It was as if he had been crying. Hiei? Crying? Why that was ridiculous! I thought as I chuckled nervously. Then I heard it. Clink, clink, clink I turned around to see black pearls bouncing down the floor. Hiei! He was crying! The pearls were falling at a faster rate. “No Hiei! Listen to me! I didn’t mean to hit you! I’m sorry!” I pleaded. < You’re going to leave me just like the others. Then I’ll be alone again. I’ve always been alone.> “No Hiei! I won’t leave you! I swear I won’t!” I cried hysterically. This was a part of Hiei that he never showed to anyone. So this is how Hiei really feels. Like a small innocent child, a scared one at that. My pleas didn’t seem to be reaching him as his voice continued to cry out < Why was I even born? Was I doomed to forever roam the Earth with this empty feeling?> Hiei? I continued to cry as I touched his cheek. One of the black pearls slipped into my hand. Hiei’s pearl, his frozen tears.
I touched his jagan experimentally. I shivered as my mind was being sucked into his. “Hiei?” I called out. This place was cold and fog was covering my vision. “Hiei? Please answer me if you can here me!” I cried desperately. Just then I heard it. Crying, soft little sobs. I followed the cries as I did the mist began to separate out of my way. In a corner, a boy with black spikes was hunched over. “Hiei?” I gently touch his shoulder. He doesn’t turn around. “Why are you here?” He asks through his tears. “I am here to help you, Hiei.” I answered. “You should leave.” He said gruffly refusing to face me. “No I won’t! And I know you don’t really want me to! You are not alone, Hiei! I am here and so are your friends!” “My-my friends?” Hiei-chan asked gently. He raised his head a little. “Uhuh!” I nodded enthusiastically my ponytail bobbing up and down. “Kurama, Yusuke and even Kuwabara!” “But why would they want me? I am such a coldhearted creature!” He looks down a t himself hatefully. He laughs sadly, “I don’t even know how to love!” he hung his head. My heart hurt as he said these words. I carefully raised his chin, “Now, that is not true!” “Of course it is! I am only good for killing and you know it!” as he said this he turned his back to me. “And how do you explain Yukina? She wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for her brother!” I insisted. “Yeah! And you know how I wonderfully messed that up! I screwed her brain and been lying to her ever since!” he yelled. “So stop lying! I know you love her dearly and would die for her! She needs to know that too!” “And what if she rejects me? I’d rather die than go through that!” “And so you’re just going to lie to her? For how long, Hiei?” I implored him. “Until she can be proud of her brother.” he answered sadly. “Well, I’m not Yukina but if I were I would be pretty damn proud of you right now! And I’d love you more than life itself!” I cried out.
My words hung above us as the seemingly endless room echoed it. Hiei-chan was stunned when he heard her passionate words. Could it be true? Could she have meant was she just said? Or was he just imagining things or worse pretending? Suddenly, he felt a pair of arms encircle his waist and hold him tightly. Unable to believe the feel of her arms around him, he turned around to face her. There in her eyes he saw what he was looking for his entire life, acceptance and the love of a sister. Slowly, gently he embraced her back.
