CHAPTER 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Kasaan, is this clean?” I asked Kasaan holding up a red sweater. She walked up to me took the shirt and observed it. Her eyebrows lowered then raised.
“I believe it’s clean, Shuichi.”
“Thank you.” I gently folded it and placed it in my bag. School had ended, I got over my flu and I was ready for the camping trip with Yusuke and everyone. We’ve been planning it all year long. It was about an hour and a half away from Tokyo in the mountains. We’ll be camping in a log cabin with no electricity or high-tech materials with us. The point is to live it like the old times. Our plan was to stay in the cabin for about a week, which will leave us all about 2 weeks to spend with our families.
“There we are.” I buckled my suitcase shut. My watch beeped. I glanced at it; 1:00 PM.
“I got to go, Kasaan. I have to meet at Yusuke’s by 1:15.” Kasaan gave me a hug and a quick goodbye kiss.
“Be careful, Shuichi.” She whispered in my ear. I gave her a slight nod and walked out of the room.
“Damn! When the HELL is Kurama gonna get here?!” Kuwabara impatiently glanced at his watch. His eyebrows began to narrow as he jumped up from the couch and began to scream.
“He’s 2 minutes late!”
Yusuke gave a long heavy sigh and shook his head.
“Shut up and sit down! You’ve been extremely way later before at other times!” he yanked on his fluff jacket and sat him down next to him. Kuwabara fell on the couch with his arms crossed glaring off in a different direction from where his friend was glaring.
Yusuke looked at his impatient bud elbowed him and whispered, “Why are you so anxious to get there anyway? You didn’t even want to come on this trip in the first place until I talked you into it.”
Kuwahara gave a small evil chuckle and glanced over at the girls chatting. They began giggling and were enjoying each other’s conversations. Kuwahara’s grin grew a mile wide as he watched Yukina’s eyes light up when she laughed and her hair flow when her head swiftly moved. She was so beautiful now that she was a bit older. She’s matured a lot more and is way more open. Kuwahara glared back at Yusuke and gave one last evil chuckle. He whispered in Yusuke’s ear.
“Because I can make a move onto Yukina if we get paired in a room together!” Kuwabara gave a giggle.
“Like hell you will!” a cold deep voice replied from behind him. Kuwahara jumped up to see Hiei right behind him.
“Agh! H-Hiei!? W-w-What the hell are you doing?” the frightened ningen stuttered.
Yusuke gave Kuwabara an ‘oh @#%$, NOW you’ve done it!’ look as he slowly backed away from the two fighters.
Hiei shot Kuwabara a nasty look as his jagan under his bandage on his forehead glew redder each time he spoke.
“You were going to do WHAT?” Hiei questioned Kuwahara.
Kuwahara folded his arms and turned away from the fire demon that he knew was about to KICK his ass. “None of your business.”
“Why you piece of-!” Hiei raised his fist about to hit Kuwahara but was just in time interrupted by me walking through the door with his luggage.
“Hi! Sorry I’m late everybody.” I said politely to the others hoping they weren’t TOO mad at me.
“Well, it’s DAMNED about time, Kurama!” Kuwahara jumped off the couch, grabbing his luggage and was the first one out of the door slamming the car door shaking. I gave Kuwahara a puzzled look as he watched him dash out the door then he shot a glare at Hiei.
“Hn. For a stupid chicken, I’m surprised he was smart enough to leave before I even got a CHANCE to kill him.” Hiei popped his knuckles with a disgusted look.
I sighed at him. “Hiei, Hiei. If we’re going to be with each other for the week can we at least ATTEMPT to get along?”
Hiei looked by his side away from his view of his fox friend.
“Hiei!” I tried to bring him back to Earth.
“Hn.”
About 5 hours later Yusuke’s eyes all puffed up craving for a few moments of sleep. The headlights made his eyes hurt that he had to squint. He suddenly saw a huge hill slowly coming up to his view. Rubbing his eyes observing the hill, he glanced at the map and tried to find his spot.
“WE’RE HERE!” Yusuke shouted victoriously. He spun a sharp curve up the hill that caused every sleeping soul in the car to be violently slid to the left side bashing their heads against the inside of the door.
“AAAAGH!” the girls jumped from their sleep.
“Dammit Yusuke! “ Botan yelled as she glanced at her watch rubbing her sore head. “It’s MIDNIGHT and you’re screaming like you’re-“ she paused to see their cabin coming up realizing they have arrived.
“We’re HERE!” she began to jump with excitement. Everybody applauded from a long LONG trip. Yusuke parked the car and everyone released their seatbelts jumping out of the car stretching. I grabbed my suitcase looking around for his fire demon friend. Sighing a heavy sigh, I walked to the back seat of the car, releasing my grip from the handle of his suitcase. I opened the back seat door to see Hiei sound asleep in the back seat.
“Hiei, we’re here. Wake up.” I slowly moved Hiei’s arm. He didn’t wake up.
“Hiei! Wake up! You expect me to carry you?!”
I slapped my friend’s arm but he still did not awake from his deep sleep. I began to smile as I looked at his sleeping face. I had to admit it but he was real kawaii and peaceful when he slept. I figured that’s one of the ways I really liked him. I always thought of what he dreams about in his sleep when I see him like this. Hehe… maybe taking over the word possibly but who am I to judge these type of things? I never even knew I even THOUGHT of this kind of stuff. Who knows? Maybe I am just curious. Shaking my head with still a small smile on my face, I took his arm leaned slowly into the back seat pulling him over my shoulder and picking him up out of the car and shutting the door. With one hand supporting my grip on Hiei over my shoulder, I picked up my luggage with my other. As I slowly walked up to the cabin with my shoes sinking in snow, I could hear Hiei behind me breathing and I could feel his heartbeat against my back. Finally I got up to the front door. Good thing it was wide open or else I would have had to kick it hoping somebody would hear and open the door for me. As I walked in, I noticed that everyone was up in their rooms. My lord, they sure were exhausted. The cabin’s heat was very comforting. Then I shut the door behind me with my foot trying best as I could not to make such a loud slam for the others.
I laid down my suitcase, and began walking to the couch. The cabin was very lovely. It had hardware floors with a lot of warm rugs covering areas of the tiling. There was a wooden staircase with a balcony that led up to the second floor. There was a big fireplace next to the couches and recliners. The den was also the kitchen, which was further on the other side of the room. I was about to lay Hiei down on the couch when Yukina walked into the room from the doorway next to the stairs.
“Did I wake you?” I whispered.
“Don’t worry. The others aren’t asleep yet. They’re just packing in.” Yukina smiled at me as she made her way to the kitchen.
“I just came in here to get a glass of water.” She looked back up to see her older brother asleep on my shoulder still. Smiling at him and looking down, she walked over to me.
“He sure is asleep, huh?”
“Yeah. It’s best we not wake him. He’s real grumpy when he wakes up.” I slowly aid him down on the couch in a comfortable position.
“You’re right.” Yukina threw a thick warm blanket that was hanging over the couch over her brother that covered his whole body. I walked over to the fireplace and turned the notch that turned on the gas logs. I looked back and saw Yukina looking at her brother in awe. She leaned over, and kissed his forehead.
“Goodnight, my dearest Onni-san.”
Glaring deeply at the rice pack, I tried to decide whether or not the others would enjoy this meal. Shrugging, I tossed it into the grocery buggy and rolled off to check out. Yusuke asked me to do grocery shopping this morning since he forgot to bring food. (How typical for him ; p) I pushed the buggy into an aisle and began to put the food on the top. Reaching for my wallet, I suddenly saw two children outside ringing a bell shivering.
“Excuse me, sir.” I asked the clerk. “Where are those children’s mother?” I asked pointing to them outside. The clerk gave a sigh and glared at me for a moment.
“Truthfully, I don’t know sir.”
“What?” I asked again.
“They’ve been out there for two days ringing that bell trying to earn money, I suppose.”
I didn’t take my eye off them. It was a boy and a girl. Judging by their height, I predicted the boy was about 10 and the girl was 7. The girl had dark brown hair that was sort of tangled and fell down over her face. She wore a long sunflower dress with socks. The socks had small holed in them. She was wrapping her arms around her to keep her warm even though she had a thin jacket around her. The boy had short brown hair in a bold looking cut. His baggy clothes looked as if they were thin in material, which didn’t keep him warm.
“That will be 76.98 sir.” The clerk said bringing me back to my observing. I paid him, took the food and walked outside to the two kids. I paused in front of them loooking at them. The little boy looked up at me.
“Would you care to donate money for us, mister?” he asked shivering. He seemed scared of me. I perhaps thought that maybe I was a lot taller than him.
“Where are your parents?” I asked.
The little boy looked down dropping his bell looking at his empty box that no one has dropped anything in.
“My mom died having my sister. My dad came home drunk last week. He fell asleep…and…”
“And then what?” I bent down so the little boy would not have to look up so high.
“He…. never woke up.”
I looked down glaring over at his little sister. She was curled up in a small ball trying to keep herself warm. She shivered with a small tear streaming down from her cheek. She looked at me sniffing away her tears giving me a shaky smile.
“Come with me. I’ll take you to my cabin.”
