All You Have Wanted To Know About Us

by Mary Jane Carayag

Do you know the people behind this paper you're holding? They are the ones who burn their eyebrows to let his paper be published for youto read. They may be your classmates or your friends. But do you really know them in person? I'll give you a glimpse of these people who are "watchdogs" of the studentry.

Each year, the Student Publication Office (SPO) changes its
composition, depending on the result of the training and workshops we give. Some have to go and some must remain. There are two kinds of faces hanging around our small office: the "new wave" and those who belong to the Jurassic era," or the antique faces."

One of the antique faces who seldom spends his time in our office (because of his busy schedule) is our Editor-in-Chief Eleazar Ojales. Kuya Elly is an AB Psychology stude whose birthday is October 27. He is an expert in finding possible "avenues for escape," especially during meetings. He loves to read books of John Grisham. And do you know that he loves painting and cross-stitching very much? So if you want to learn about them, just ask this lovable and approachable guy.

She's a true Filipina. In fact, she's even called the "Maria Clara" of HIC. But there's something different. She loves to play softball and basketball. Aside from her commitment at home and inside the campus, she is also the two-term vice-president of the SSC, an officer of FEG and the Associate Editor of this paper. She is simple person who enjoys what God has in store for her. She's Carol "Cacai" Torre. By the way. she graduated cum laude this year.

The original "baby" of the SPO, being the youngest section editor, is no other than our Feature Editor and Literary Editor, Clifford Marshal "Chuck" Ablaza. He crossed Asia's longest bridge from Taft, Eastern Samar to study Psychology in HIC. He is a poet by vocation, and he loves to read books of every shade and variety, write and analyze poems and other literary pieces. Chuck is a simple, brainy guy who loves listening to rock music. He is a certified lady killer. Blame it on his being too handsome (pardon my hyperbolic description)

Next in line is no other than my good friend Bryan Joseph Matillano, our News Editor. Brian hails from the town of Dulag. He must be the busiest person I've ever known. He's very sensitive to the point that his ears would easily perk right up if he senses that he is in jeopardy. As an advocate of peace and progress, he aims to do his share in the wholistic and integral liberation of our people. In fact, he has already been doing it. He is a simple person with a strong will to go on even when trapped in a difficult situation. No matter how busy he may be of his commitments, he sees to it not to take his students for granted.

"I'm dying to bombard you with questions" is the only line I
remember from this guy. He's our Sports Editor since 1998. Wendell "Weng" Miralles is from the town of Alang-alang. RV's Store and ERAP Store are his favorite hangouts (doing what?). He goes there only when he's free from obligations at home or at school.

Our Science and Technology Editor, Cheryl "T-che" Luangco, loves baking very much, Say it and she'll bake it for you. From fruit cakes to the more fanciful (and expensive) Queen Elizabeth. She's a bit shy, timid but a jolly student who comes from Tanauan. She's a strong woman who values dignity. She also loves gardening and enjoys reading books.

Fernando "Joey" Gozo is a BSC stude. And if you can recall, he was last years' Sports Editor. He loves to play basketball and baseball. In fact, he has always played during the Intramurals. Chicken dishes are his favorite.

Another BSC stude is Jonard "Bibem" Sode. He is fond of dancing and acting. A beach lover and star gazer, Bibem spends time leisurely by the seaside.

Another nature lover is Florante "Renante" Grabillo who lives to take long walks, savoring nature's tranquility. He is a person who loves to explore the unexplorable. He's fond of predicting what will happen.

Many people say that an artist has a sense of humor. That's Gilbert "Guibs" Salazar. Kuya Guibs is a very jolly person. Taking up BSED Music, he loves to sing and to play guitar. He is a member of the popular singing group in Palo, the Rah-Rah Rousers. He believes that life would be better if you add a little spice to it.

Another artist who belongs to the new generation is Marcelo Machip Dy. He comes from the heartland of Metro Manila, so he speaks fluent Filipino most of the time. He is a very casual person who likes to illustrate and draw. Art is his forte.

She is known in the campus for her friendly attitude. She loves to play volleyball and softball. Mention all the "ings" you know and Rainel "Rain" Boco likes them. No wonder why she stays inside the office most of the time where all these "ings" can be found. Her day is not complete without tamarindo. We could always run to her in times of trouble.

Mary Ann "Maan" Verona is a staff writer who belongs to the "Jurrasic era." She is one of the pioneers of this paper when this was first published in 1996. She's a BSC stude. She like Jolina Magdangal very much that she already watched every movie of the actress. And do you know that she can't leave their house without wearing her lipstick?

A small but terrible person. That's Haidee "Heids" Margallo. She is described by everyone as cute. Those who refuse to believe just have to see for themselves. She eats anything edible as long as it appeals to her taste. She believes that you'll never learn until you try it.

Glenn dela Cruz is a freshman BSED stude who mostly spends his time playing computer games. Glenn believes that we need to consider God as priority in order to attain prosperity.

Vanessa Alapit is one of the cute and chubby daughters of Mrs. Marian Alapit. She finished high school in HIC. Now she is taking up BS Biology. She is mostly seen with her white-uniformed friends chatting about what tickles their fancies.

Another Tagalog-speaking staff witer in our midst is Meriam Gauran. She's a BEED stude. She believes that it is better to be an ordinary person working for a living than to play the part of someone great but go hungry. She came all the way from the tamaraw province of Mindoro.

The only Midwifery stude who writes for this paper is Ma. Editha Brier. She is a model student who takes her studies seriously, A very sweet person, she's fond of eating sweet delicacies. She likes to watch cartoons on TV, but she's mature enough to face any obstacle.

Mary Jane Carayag (that's me!) is a the Managing Editor and Layout Editor. My family and my friends call me Jane. I'm a true-blue Taclobanon, but I'm not familiar with deep Waray words. I spent my high school years in HIC. I'm the person who values friendship much. I hate wasting my time doing nothing. So I kill time by reading, writing, sketching, singing and dancing. I'm a sports fanatic, who loves to play softball, basketball, and tennis. I am physically thin, but I'm a track-and-field player since my elementary years. February 23 is a special day for me. It's my birthday, you know.

The SPO room is a haven of wild people. That's why Mr. Ian Sabalza, our adviser, sometimes runs out of patience and gets mad as hell. He is a very meticulous adviser. He wants everything in good shape. Students say that he is a nice friend to be with if you only know him. Reading is his number one passion, and he devours books of Victoria Holt. He
adores Jessica Zafra so much that he never fails to watch her in Points of View every Monday evening on Studio 23. In fact, he is vainly looking for Zafra's anthology of essays called Twisted. I like his booming, resonant voice, too.
