What is a SET?

A set is a collection of objects or things. The objects or things in the set are called the elements or members of the set. There are many words that indicate such collections. The main characteristics of a set in mathematics that is well-defined.

SETS, EQUAL SETS AND EQUIVALENT SETS

  • The cardinal number of a set C is the number of elements in the set and is denoted by n(A). Thus, in C= {a, e, i, o, u}, n(A)=5 because set A contains 5 elements. .

  • Two sets A and B are equivalent, denoted by A~ B( "A is equivalent to B) if they have the same number of elements. For example, A ={ 1, 2, 3, 4} and B ={ b, a, t, s}. Since set A has four elements, then set A is equivalent to set B. in symbols, A  B

  • Two sets A and B are equal, denoted by A = B ("A is equal to B") if they have same elements. The following are equal:

      A = { a, b, c}
      B = { b, a, c}
