We live at a crucial time in the history of our planet. While global warming, terrorism and the threat of nuclear proliferation pose grave threats to our very survival as a species, hunger, strife, poverty and social injustice continue to plague our society. Gas prices are the highest they have ever been. The United States has been involved in a costly and counterproductive war in Iraq that has now opened a vaccume and window for terrorists of the future. The executive branch and the republican-controlled congress have continued to chip away at our civil liberties. Will the war ever end? Will American troops ever come home? We are, indeed in a quagmire. American troops can only come home when Iraqi security forces can ensure the security of Iraq or, in other words, drive out the insurgency and and keep the country friendly to American interests. How can the insurgency be kept out without closing the borders? In my humble opinion whenever Ameirican troops are withdrawn Iraq will plunge into a civil war and it will become a breeding place for terrorists. Although I had no fondness for Saddam Hussaine, it would have been better to prop him up to control our interests rather than open the power vaccume. While we are on the issue of Iraq, what ever happened to Afghanistan? By the way, are'nt Iran and Syria the biggest terrorist havens in the Middle East? Why didn't we invade those countries? The answers, my friends, is political expediency. The President needed an easy target and Iraq was already weaked from the first war. However, like most of this administration's fiascos, they didn't understand the culture and politics of the region and didn't care.
How does the above issue tie into oil and gas prices? This will be our next topic.
