                         Curriculum Standards

"The Marsh versus The Mall" relates to the following South Carolina standards for third graders in science, language arts, and research:

Life Science

I.    Characteristics of Organisms

     A.    Organisms
can survive only in habitats in which their needs can be met.
             1.    Compare and contrast the basic needs of plants and animals.
             2.    Select and describe an appropriate habitat for a plant or animal.

     B.    Each plant or animal has different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.
             1.    Investigate and predict how structural adaptations, such as methods of movement, defense, rearing young, camouflage, and mimicry function to allow animals to respond to life needs.
             3.    Investigate and predict how physical adaptations, such as seed dispersal, scent, color of flower, and tropism (light and gravity) function to allow plants to respond to life needs.

III.    Organisms and Their Environments

     A.    All animals depend on plants.
              1.    Investigate and predict ways living things will interact with each other and the environment.
              2.    Interpret the interdependency of plants and animals within a food chain by defining the following, producer, consumer, decomposer, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, predator and prey.

     B.    When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce, and others die or move to new locations.
               1.    Describe how habitats and organisms change over time due to many influences (effects of natural forces, wind, rain, water, air, sunlight, and temperature).
               2.    Research and describe how habitats are managed and species are monitored in South Carolina.
              3.    Investigate and describe behavioral adaptations, such as hibernation, migration, and dormancy, that allow living things to respond to seasonal conditions.
              4.    Investigate and describe that aquatic and terrestrial habitats support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources.
              5.    Investigate, communicate, and debate that natural events, natural resources and human influences can affect the survival/extinction of a species. (P)
              6.    Determine how humans impact natural resources (renewable and nonrenewable.)

Communication - The student will recognize, demonstrate, and analyze the qualities of effective communication.

I.    Communication: Speaking - The student will use speaking skills to participate in large and small groups in both formal and informal situations.
     A.    Demonstrate the ability to face an audience, make eye contact, and use the appropriate voice level.
     E.    Begin giving brief presentations, demonstrations, and oral reports.   Aligned Resources
     F.    Demonstrate the ability to participate in creative dramatics.
     H.    Demonstrate the ability to use oral language to inform, to entertain, and to compare and contrast different viewpoints.
     I.    Demonstrate the ability to use visual aids, props, and technology to support and extend his or her meaning and enhance his or her oral presentations.
     M.    Begin using effective organizational strategies to prepare oral presentations.
     N.    Begin making appropriate statements to communicate agreement or disagreement with others' ideas.

Research - The student will access and use information from a variety of appropriately selected sources to extend his or her knowledge.

II.    Gathering Information and Refining a Topic - The student will gather information from a variety of sources.
     A.    Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of resources, including technology, to access information.
     B.    Demonstrate the ability to gather information from a variety of sources, including those accessed through the use of technology
      C.    Begin organizing information from a variety of sources, including those accessed through the use of technology.
      D.    Demonstrate the ability to document sources by listing titles and authors with teacher assistance.

III.    Preparing and Presenting Information - The student will use a variety of strategies to prepare and present selected information.
     C.    Demonstrate the ability to present his or her research findings in a variety of formats.
