3. Express the essence

Boringpostcards tell stories without speaking.

In broad daylight, a young Maori woman in a piupiu tourist performance get-up gingerly holds a worm in front of a stuffed kiwi. Will it bite?

A young mum pushes her pram across a zebra crossing on Dee Street, Invercargill. She is on her way to the shops, unaware of her role as the centrepiece in a stunningly symmetrical composition in green, yellow and red.

Innumerable austin 1100s and garishly striped canvas awnings shield campers from the relentless sun at Kaiteriteri beach. No-one at the campsite knows or cares what an "ozone layer" is.

A nation looks at itself and begins to recognise something new. It is not England. And it certainly isn't Australia. Like adolescents, we cringe when we look in the mirror, but a sense of identity is beginning to gel. And a sense of identity is important, we think.
Will we allow ourselves to be proud?
