What is it? We have no idea. It's a strange vase thing with spikes on the bottom and some sort of carvings on it. What it can do is more important. Cassie had no idea she had any sort of powers before coming into contact with it. Cutting herself on one of the spikes, and allowing the blood to drip into it, seemed to activate her powers, and also seemed to draw the Nephelim to her.
Azazeal tells her it was no coincidence that she found it, and it's all part of some master plan...we don't really know yet. It's also definatly worth mentioning that the old voodoo slave guy we see Rachel McBain observing back at the start of the first episode was doing something with it while he sacrificed a chicken.
Touching it brings Cassie visions, usually something to do with the McBain family. She describes it as being like touching an electric fence whilst watching a scene from The Shining...
