Background
Megalopolis is a region made up of
several large cities and their surrounding areas in sufficient proximity
to be considered a single urban complex. This region is an extensive
metropolitan area and may be considered a long chain of continuous
metropolitan areas. Megalopolis model is based on the idea that if the
cities work together, they can create a new urban from that will increase
economic opportunity and global competitiveness for each individual city
and for the nation as awhole. The component metropolitan areas will have
to cooperate in the formation of a structure that takes advantage of the
complementary roles of each area while addressing common concerns in the
areas of transportation, economic development, environmental protection,
and aquity.
These metropolitan cities
are funtionally inter-related one to another that can be clearly seen from
its daily commuting among them which can reach thousands and even million
of peoples involved in daily activity. Moreover, the development of each
of those cities will eventually bring some impacts to other cities around
it such as traffic congestion, floods, scarcity of ground water and lack
of land for public facilities, etc.
Various problems of those
metropolitan cities will definitely increase in line with the growth of
those cities in the future. Such problems will become very difficult to be
handled by each munipality, but must be put in the frame of cooperation by
all related parties comprehensively, either among the municipalities or in
a cooperation with private sectors. The scope of integrated development
and management approach is mainly including spatial planning ang
infrastructures development
aspects.
