| The Herring Island Sailing Fleet was formed by MRYC members who were interested in a regular racing program in the Miles River area. It sponsors races for cruising boats on alternate Saturdays (excluding major holiday weekends) from May through October. MRYC member, Hugh Kabler, shown here with telephone, is still one of our most active racers. |
|
Until the early 1900's Herring Island was above water in the area between Bennett Point at the entrance to the Wye River and Harbourtowne Resort. Our regular races start at noon near the shoal that remains and use closed courses varying from 3.2 to 16.2 miles depending on wind conditions, and with the hope that most of the boats will be able to finish in about three hours. |
|
Boats that are currently racing regularly range from 21' to 44'. Some of the regular competitors include a HinckleyBermuda 40, an Ericson 35, and a Catalina 38, shown here -- as well as a Cheoy Lee Sigma 36, C&C 30, Bristol 35, Triton 28, Ericson 38, Westphal 28 and a Cal 27. Join in the fun for any
series race for only a $5.00/race entry fee or an annual membership for all races and activities. Races
are handicapped using PHRF ratings. If
a boat does not have a PHRF certificate a provisional rating will be
assigned. Spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats race together but boats
that elect before a race starts not to use a spinnaker receive an
increase in their rating for that race, based on the Charleston Ocean
Racing Association (CORA) advisories. See General Race Instructions for more
information. |
