What is
Jamu ?
Jamu is the unique herbal remedies from Indonesia, and
has been used as a potent to cure many diseases for many centuries.
The name of 'Jamu'
Javanese use the name "Jamu" for
herbal remedies; remedies that do not use synthetic chemical additives. Jamu comes from
ancient Javanese tradition that has existed long before modern pharmacology came to
Indonesia. Some of its ingredients are hundreds years old and is being used until today.
The 'Dukun' or 'tabib' (the name of our traditional doctor /natural doctor) used this
tradition as it was used in the ancient era. Then, as now, the Jamu tradition is popular
among the common people. Today almost 80% of Indonesian people use the Jamu tradition. For
the Indonesian people, Jamu is as popular as milk is popular in the west.
History of Jamu
The origin of Jamu is obscure. No one really knows its source.
However, popular stories link Jamu to the seventeenth century Mataram Hindu Empire. There
ladies of the palace, preoccupied with keeping themselves young and beautiful for their
husband, undertook the preparation of Jamu and herbal cosmetics. Madhawapura's Inscription
from Majapahit Empire tells us about 'Jamu maker ' that called as 'Acaraki'.
Advantage of Jamu
There are many varieties of Jamu formulas. They covers all human healthy problems. The
'Cabe puyeng' formula is able to cure rheumatics, 'gula asem' cures vitamin C deficiency,
'beras kencur' is for refreshing the body and curing fatique; 'daun papaya' cures malaria;
'sawanan' refreshes the blood. All of these traditional formulas are well known in
Indonesia.
Jamu is not used for medicine only.
For instance, 'Galian Singset' formula is suitable for body slimming. Other jamu formulas
are for skin whitening, hair treatment, body smell refreshments, etc. Jamu has also been
used to improve ones feeling of power and spirit for life, thereby assuring matrimonial
