Monk Bowl Village
Go Back to Thailand
Buddhist monks in Thailand accept all their alms or food from the community in monk bowls.  Traditionally these bowls are made by taking 8 pieces of steel that symbolize the 8 limbs of the Buddhist religion and hand welding them with copper in a wood oven.  The bowl is then  pounded with a heavy hammer and sanded  smooth with a metal file.  Finally it's covered with several layers of black lacquer and  then ready to receive offerings from the community.  Today these bowls are made in factories creating a more health, wallet and efficiency conscious option.  Luckily we tracked down the one village in Thailand that still practices the traditional manner.  They enthusiastically let us try our hand at the process.
