The Mother of all temples in Bali is Ulun Danu Batur. Situated in the north east of the island, people travel for hours just to worship here. Women place offerings of flowers, eggs sugar, chicken, dogs, birds, plants and rice to God in thanks for their existence. The temple itself is adorned with ribbons and sashes of all colors symbolizing prosperity and protection from evil. The priests, in white, take turns leading the worship during the marathon prayer sessions that last late into the evenings. If you look closely you will find a cow's head sacrifice in the center photo above. Hindu people don't eat beef and restaraunts in proximity to a Hindu temple aren't allowed to serve it. |
