| The Angkor Kings built the Temples of Angkor from the 9th to 13th centuries AD. The Khmer Empire ruled a vast area of land including parts of Vietnam, China, and all the way to the Bay of Bengal to the west. Angkor Wat is believed to be the largest religious structure in the world. It was constructed as a funerary temple to honor Vishnu, the Hindu Deity with whom King Suryavarman identified. Angkor Tom (Great City) covers 10 kilometers and was built by Angkor's greatest King Jayavarman VII. At its height, Angkor Tom may have supported a population of one million people (at this time London had 50,000). Right: Julie and I in front of Angkor Wat just prior to sunset.
