Michelle's Gay Old Time
*NW Magazine - February 2000*
Michelle Williams, the star of TV's Dawsons's Creek, has startled her fans by taking a controversial role as a teenage lesbian. The filme, If These Walls Could Talk 2, deals with three women's lesbianism in the '60s, '70s and 2000. Michelle stars in the '70s segment, as a girl whose heart is stolen by a mannish woman, played by Chloe Sevingy. Other stars in the film include Sharon Stone, Ellen DeGeneres and Vanessa Redgrave. NW caught up with Michelle to ask her about her daring role.
NW: Was there any concern about playing a lesbian, with regard to future roles?
Michelle: It never crossed my mind until these questions started being posed. I think it is really rare in this profession that you come across something that has the opportunity to alter somebody's perception, and I would jump at it anytime. I'm absolutely thrilled to have the age group that watches Dawson's Creek have their eyes opened by something that I find to be intellegent, provocative and necessary.
NW: Did the nudity bother you?
MW: No, I did a play that had nudity involved. I use my heart and soul in my work, so why shouldn't I use my body? I'm not ashamed of my body. It's really not just about the nudity - there are so many more issues surrounding this project: the sexuality is just one of them.
NW: Do you have gay friends?
MW: Yes, some of the dearest people in my life. It infuriates me and hurts me to see people that I love being discrimianted against or looked down upon, and this was also an awesome chance to show my support for them.
NW: Are there any other issues you'd like to deal with in future projects?
MW: I guess issues concerning women, like abortion. The republican presidential debate has really upset me - anything that is a challenge or a risk.
NW: Do you think Dawson's has lost its way recently?
MW: Yes, and that's all I'll say.
