My Secret Life

Wonder what it's like to go from kissing Dawson on the hottest show on TV to screaming like a maniac in the way scary Halloween: H20? We did - so we asked Michelle to write down her deepest thoughts. Here, the Michelle only her best friends know.
So you think Capeside is a small town?
I lived in Kalispell, a small town in Montana, until I was 9. It was the kind of place where most people believed that if you were born there, you got married there, and then lived on a farm. But my family moved to San Diego and that's when I started getting into show business. I saw a theater production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and I knew I wanted to be an actress.
School daze
High school was tough for me, like it is for everyone. You're trying to fit in and be cool and be accepted. But it's also the time to figure out who you are and what you stand for. It's really rewarding to know that life after high school gets better. Despite the bad stuff, I feel like I turned out okay.
My weirdest hobby
I don't sing in the shower, but I used to tap dance there. I know it's dangerous, in fact, I've actually fallen while dancing in the shower! It seemed like a good time to practice, so I was tapping away on day thinking, "This is really dangerous," when all of a sudden my mother heard this great big thud! She came running upstairs and found me passed out in the tub.
Auditioning for Dawson's Creek
When I first read the script, I thought it was the best I every read. I remember reading it and thinking, "I'm gonna get this." And I'd never had that feeling before. So I went in and auditioned for the part of Jen. Let's just say it was a big, heart-pounding, sweaty-palm experience. Waiting to hear whether or not I got the role was even worse. The day I found out I got the part, I had been in a car accident. I was in tears and hysterical, and then my agent called me in my car. I was so excited - not only about the job, but that I could afford to fix the dent in my car.
What James is really like...
He is a sweet, sensitive, guitar-playing sort of guy.
And Katie's...
...sweet, too. We hang out together because when you're the only girls on the set, you become compatriots. Y'know, girls against boys.
And Josh's...
...incredibly intelligent. We both have strong viewpoints about politics and philosophies which are polar opposites. Sometimes we agree, but when we disagree, we get into really good, thought-provoking arguments which turn into yelling matches!
My first on-screen kiss
Kissing on TV or in the movies is totally not as enticing or romantic as it seems. It's usually shot at 3 a.m. when you're cold and tired. I was 15 when I had to do my first on-screen kiss during a movie of the week. I had to passionately make out with this guy and my dad was on the set! I could see my dad watching us, so it was completely uncomfortable.
Speaking of kissing...
I don't have a boyfriend right now and I'm not in the market for one either. At this point in my life, I just really enjoy having a comfort level with guys where there isn't this sexual thing that gets in the way of everything. But, I have to say, if a great relationship fell in my lap, it might be something I'd get into.
The kind of guy I like...
...is intelligent and funny. You know, someone who challenges you with his ideas and inspires a passion within you. He must have something in him that I would like to have in myself.
How Jen is like me
I guess I relate to that sort of old soul, been-around-grew-up-fast quality Jen has. I mean, I was living on my own when I was 16. My mom kind of freaked when I told her I wanted to move out and live on my own. I'm her baby! But eventually she accepted the fact that my life was way different from all of her friends' kids.
I'm so not into the Glam/celeb thing
When I'm not working, I really love just slummin' around the house. If it's "Do I go on the treadmill for an hour or do I sleep for an hour?" I'll usually go for sleep. The Michelle you see on TV isn't really how I look. It's like playing dress up and make-believe.
I'm totally casual hanging at home
I like my Adidas warm-up pants and a pair of motorcycle boots that I've had for four years. I guess you could describe my style as high-class thrift store. My last great thrift store find is this cool bowling shirt I picked up in Toronto. It was only $3!
My H20 co-star, Josh Harnett...
...is the best! I loved working with him. He's a great actor and not a bad kisser!
Horror movies are fun, but...
In Halloween: H20 - the seventh Halloween movie - I play Josh Harnett's girlfriend. I never saw any of the Halloweens so as soon as I got the part, I rented the first and second one, and then the fifth one, which is completely unwatchable. I think our Halloween takes off where the first one ended. I have to admit, horror films are not my fave kind of flicks, but sometimes it's fun to scare the crap out of yourself.
Sure, screaming looks easy
Since it's a horror movie, obviously there's a lot of screaming. When I got the part, I said, "I wonder if I could scream." So I looked in the mirror and let out these little ah-ah's. Uh oh - I was worried I was gonna suck 'cause I couldn't do one of those huge loud screams. But when you get on the set and you're in the moment, it's pretty easy to scream like a maniac.
I know Dawson's Creek was a hit when...
...me and a friend went to Disneyland and I got totally mobbed. It was no longer "the happiest place on earth". We had to be escorted around through back entrances and stuff. Someone took my black straw hat. They took it off my head and ran away with it. So, if you're reading this and you know who has my black hat, I'd really like it back!
I just love kick-ass chick shows
The best movies every are Frances and The Philadelphia Story. I have one guilty pleasure: Le Femme Nikita. It's such a kick-ass chick show. I'm really into Ella Fitzgerald and all that kind of bluesy jazz music. And then there's '80s rock, like Concrete Blonde. Alanis Morissette is really good. I also really like the Rolling Stones and Van Morrison. When I want to wallow in my misery like the best of them, there's nothing better than Ani DiFranco.
The most touching thing that has ever happened to me
After my grandmother passed away, we went to her home to pack up her belongings. But while I was there, I discovered she had collected every single article, every single magazine that I had been in - everything I had ever done. They were all sitting right next to her bed. That just really touched me. It was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had.
