Michelle Williams Shoots Her Mouth Off
by Michael Peck
*TV Guide - July 1999*
Add Dawson's Creek heartbreaker Michelle Williams to the list of pro-firearms celebs speaking out about gun control, which is hotter than ever in Hollywood in the wake of the Columbine High School shootings. "You take away the right to bear arms, and next it'll be 'Well, this freedom of speech isn't all it's cracked up to be,' " the actress, who plays the worldly Jennifer Lindley on the WB hit (Wednesdays, 8 pm/ET), tells George magazine. And the right-of-center positioning doesn't end there for the 18-year-old daughter of a former Republican state senate candidate. Next up, appropriately enough, she'll be seen on the big screen in Dick, playing a flirty teen with a hankering for hangdog-faced President Richard Nixon.
Williams's overheated character ultimately helps send Nixon's presidency into a tailspin, but the lady herself offers no praise for such antics. "You can't give sex away too freely," she says. "I hate how they made Monica Lewinsky a celebrity. She was on Saturday Night Live because she had sex with the wrong guy."
The actress takes some solace in the fact that her character's physical charms aren't the center of all her camera time. However, dumbing herself down was no picnic. "It's nice that my tits aren't the focal point of every scene," she says. "But acting stupid drove me crazy. It's not me."
