Web Browsers

Opera My personal favorite. This is a great browser and also stops unwanted popups.
Firefox The newest kid on the block, although Firefox has origins dating back to the first publicly well known and ubiquitous Netscape.

Popup Stoppers

Sick of the popups from Geocities on my site? Try a popup stopper. I don't use any of these as Opera automatically stops popups. If you don't want to get Opera then try one of these.

Operating Systems

Linux A Unix clone, already popular with programmers and other people in the know. It is also rapidly becoming popular among large businesses. I've pointed you at Knoppix, a German distribution of Linux. This is entirely safe and is simple to use. Just download the ISO file and burn it to CD. Knoppix will boot from CD and ease you into Linux at a pace suitable for you.
Free BSD BSD is another Unix clone. Although internally different to Linux the interface presented to the user is very similar. Try this if you're feeling too bold for Knoppix
Amoeba Amoeba is a strange beast. Like it's namesake it can be a standalone entity, but add another to it and it remains a single entity, just larger and stronger. Amoeba can run on a single computer, but will run better on a group of computers. This group however, will will be seen by users as a single more powerful computer
Plan 9 Plan 9 is another distributed OS like Amoeba. This is is a newer OS and has implemented some very good ideas.
Inferno Inferno is a fairly recent addition to the operating system scene. It has some very cool features, such as being able to run on top of most other operating systems
SkyOS SkyOS has a small but loyal fanbase. It has a very good looking windowed user interface.
