| Applying QDFRAPPS to Cosmetic Surgery Here are just a few ideas to help you. You can amend as you see fit. I have been pretty general in my statements and you can argue for or against any of them. What you should NOT do is simply cut and paste I do not want to grade myself! These are simply ideas for you to develop. First we have to define what we mean when we talk about Cosmetic Surgery! CS is any surgery we dont actually need! Or do we? Quality of Life For SomeTheists might... ARGUE that if It could enhance our physical appearance and thereby enrich our psychological dimension, especially if we are suffering from a genetic 'deformity' or have been badly scared, perhaps in a fire, it could then be acceptable to have some restorative surgery. We have God given freewill to do what is morally acceptable. In some instances this form of CS is morally acceptable. Against Most Theists might ... ARGUE God created us as we are, for reasons we cannot even begin to imagine so we should not change what God has made 'perfect'. It would not improve our spiritual dimension. We would only be doing it to please ourselves, and/or others, and that is not what God wants us to do. Some Agnostics/Atheists might counter by suggesting that: We can decide what we want to do, we have freewill, but only if we dont ask someone of faith, who does not want to, to help us. Also, we should pay for it ourselves. We should not expect others to pay for it for us. Double Effect For Some Theists might argue: The reason why we are doing it needs to be considered. If we do it for our own well being, to improve our quality of life, then it is morally acceptable. Against Most Theists would conter: Anyone who does this does it, only ever does it for them-selves, not for God, for God made us as we are for a purpose, even if we connot image what that purpose is. Some Agnostics/Atheists might say: The reason why we have it done is a personal issue and not open to debate, unless someone else would suffer as a direct result. Freewill For Some Theists could say: That we should use our freewill wisely and as long as no else is abused then there is no problem. Against Most Theists may argue: God has given us freewill, so that we may chose to follow Gods teachings, or not. If we follow God, doing what God wants, helping others rather than thinking of ourselves first. The money we might have to spend, could be put to far better use, helping the less fortunate obtain their basic needs/rights. 5000 spent on a face lift, could plant 500 wells in Africa and whole communities could benefit from clean running water! Some Agnostics/Atheists could agrue: We can use our freewill as we deem fit, so long as our actions do not abuse anyone else. Relative Morality For Some Theists suggest: Anything that enriches our quality of life by allowing us to feel more accepted in society is fine. It depends on where you live and what is seen as normal. CS is not illegal, so it must be okay. Against Most Theists would argue: God does not give us relative rules, we make them. We should consider to Gods rules, before we consider our own. Some Agnostics/Atheists would say: We have to live in our own society the best we can. If cs helps us fit in then there is not issue. It is not illegal. Absolute Morality For Some Theists might argue: So long as we have do what God wants first, then we can improve our own quality of life too. Against Yet most Theists would counter this by suggesting: We should only do what God asks. When everyone has the basic needs, and all are equal, only then we might be able to consider all other wants. Some Agnostics/Atheists say: We all have human responsibilities and our first is to ourselves; we cannot look after others until we are okay. Howover, most Agnostics/Atheists would agree: We all have human responsibilities and when everyone has their basic needs, then we can consider what we need for our selves. Process Theology God is in the process of living with us and knows if we are doing Gods work or our own. God knows the intention behind our words and actions. Predestination Theory God knows where our individual priorities lie. God lays before us various paths, but we choose which one's to take. Sanctity of Life We are all unique, and our differences are our gift from God, what we do with them is our gift to God. There is a lesson to be learnt in how we treat each other. If we abuse those who are different in any way we belittle Gods creation; no one should feel they have to change to please others, it's God we should be pleasing. We have to consider how our spirituality will be improved, or not, if we alter that which God has made 'perfect'. We are all perfect and beautiful in Gods eyes. Agnostics/Atheists would conclude: If God is all good, perfect and all loving, why does God make us so we stand out in society? Surely God could make us all accepably beautiful, thereby reducing feelings of alienation! As there is no God, we need to think and care for our own well being, and if CS improves our quality of Life, and does not break any laws, then what is the problem? |
