WISHES

Have you ever wished for something that never came true? Some people feel unhappy when they do not get what they wish for. Then again, unless you are careful about wishing, you could be worse off for it. Tom, a boy who lived in the country, must have never given this idea much thought. Last summer he was too busy wishing his time away. He was not satisfied hiking in the woods or rafting down the gently flowing creek where he spent most of his time. While other people his age were reading, creating, or playing in the warm sun, Tom just sat on large rock by the creek, wishing for abilities that he did not possess, rather than using the ones he had.

He saw the tall trees swaying in the wind and wished that he could stand as tall as they. He saw a frog leap, and wished that he had such legs to leap like the frog. One warm afternoon, while watching a large winged dragonfly hovering over the creek, Tom wished that he could grow wings, and fly like the insects that he admired.

It was one of those warm days during which most people who found themselves by the creek would be tempted to jump in and swim. Tom was not interested in a swim, much less anything else. He just sat on a rock, dangling his feet in the water until he felt too sleepy to sit up. It was his habit to nap by the creek when not daydreaming, and that day was like the ones before. This day would not have been unusual at all, had it not been for a very strange occurrence.

When he awoke from his long nap, things looked very different from Tom's perspective. At first, he thought that everything around him had grown; but when Tom looked around and saw that he had sprouted long wings from his shoulders, he knew otherwise. He had gotten his last wish - and was like a dragonfly in every way!

The afternoon was exciting for Tom, who buzzed a tune as he flew along the creek and drifted on the breeze. That is, until he started buzzing around the large frog that he had seen earlier, when he was a boy.

He began thinking that his wings were much better than the long legs of the frog. But just as that thought was occurring to Tom, something unexpected - and rather unfortunate - happened. The frog, who had been wishing for a snack noticed Tom flying around above, hopped up, and with a quick flick of the tongue, got his wish also.

Unfortunately, Tom did not make a tasty meal for the frog, who ended his day with a belly ache.
